Her stomach was empty, but the dry heaving wouldn’t stop. She kept gagging until she was spitting up nothing but bile.

She didn’t know how long she stayed there, doubled over. Suddenly, a warm, broad hand settled on her back, rubbing circles.

“You okay?” Ethan’s voice came from behind her.

Mia just shook her head. “I’m… I’m fine. You should go, Mr. Hale. You shouldn’t have to see this.”

Ethan handed her a cup of warm water. “Clean yourself up. I’m taking you to the hospital.”

I’m fine.” Mia Carter took the water. She rinsed her mouth, flushed the toilet, and grabbed a few tissues to wipe away the mess.

Only then did she turn to face him.

Her pale cheeks were flushed a sickly red, and her eyes were glazed with unshed tears. She looked pathetic the kind of fragile that usually made people want to reach out and protect her.

Ethan Hale stood in the doorway. His tall, lean frame completely blocked her way out.

‘The Bennett project kicks off in a few days,” he said, his voice cold. “It’s going to be a grind.”

His meaning was clear: get yourself checked out now so you don’t screw up the work later.

Mia’s vision was still a bit blurry from the nausea.

Even so, she could tell Ethan was expressionless. There wasn’t a hint of real concern on his face.

It was just a routine check-in. Purely professional.

She shook her head and forced a tight, hollow smile. “Don’t worry, Mr. Hale. I won’t let it affect my work.”

The deal between Bayview and the Bennetts wasn’t even that big at least, not big enough to require Ethan’s personal supervision.

But because it involved the Bennett family, they got the VIP treatment. Ethan was micromanaging every single detail and making every call himself.

Mia kept her eyes down. Her face was still flushed, and despite her fragile appearance, she looked incredibly stubborn. Ethan’s expression darkened.

“You’re the one who said it health issues are the one thing you can’t control.”

Mia’s breath hitched.
