She stared at the screen. Jaxon had already hung up.
The elevator doors slid open. She stepped inside and rushed out of the building, trying to put the weird call out of her mind. She had enough to deal with.
Back in the massive penthouse office, Ethan stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, staring down at the Northbrook skyline.
The lights from Bayview Tower cut through the dark, lighting up half the sky.
His face was a mask of cold indifference. He leaned against the window frame, a cigarette smoldering slowly between his fingers.
Smoke curled around Ethan, blurring the hard, sharp edges of his face.
He was chain-smoking, but even the heavy hit of nicotine couldn’t settle the restless agitation clawing at his
hest.
Back at her place, Mia FaceTimed Nina. She needed her friend to pick up another round of morning sickness meds.
The doctor told you that you can’t keep popping those pills,” Nina said, her voice full of concern. “Everything has side effects. You can’t keep going like this, Mia.”
Nina pushed harder. “Are you really not going to consider Jaxon’s help?”
Mia had been so sure she could handle it alone. Now, for the first time, her resolve started to crack.

Nina didn’t even hesitate. “That kid is my life, I’d fight him until my last breath, I’d go to hell and back before I let him take my son.”
