“Just… wondering,” Lila muttered.
Trying to dig into what Mia had been doing during her six months away from HQ was tough for Lila, especially since she had to keep it all on the down-low.
She’d heard a rumor that Mia went to the hospital to see Jaxon today and had practically sprinted over to get the
scoop.
We aren’t that close,” Mia answered honestly. “Don’t forget, the guy is your brother’s arch-nemesis.”
f she got too friendly with Jaxon, it would definitely be crossing a line.
ila let out a soft “oh.” “Right. I was just asking. Don’t take it personally.”
Mia watched her with those clear eyes of hers, waiting for the other shoe to drop.
nstead of waiting for a response, Lila stood up and headed for the door. “I’ll go grab you some lunch. Stay put!”
Wait” Mia tried to stop her. They were cutting it close on time.
But Lila was already gone, fast as a bullet.
ila grabbed a quick meal nearby and called Mrs. Hale Sr. on her way
back.
She says she barely knows Jaxon Rivers. Grandma, do you buy that?”
Mrs. Hale Sr. sighed, sounding like she had a massive headache. “At this point, every guy Mia’s even looked at is a uspect!”
ila groaned. There were hundreds of guys at the branch office who’d crossed paths with Mia.
By the time she finished checking them all, Mia’s kid would be in middle school!
Whatever. She’d start with the easy ones.
axon was a public figure, at least. Tracking his whereabouts for the last six months wouldn’t be too hard…
Ten minutes before the clock started, Lila made it back with the food.
Mia inhaled her meal, downed some water, and grabbed her bag. She had a client meeting to get to with Ethan.
Ethan, come on, let me come too,” Chloe Bennett whined.
The office door swung open, and Chloe followed Ethan inside like a lost puppy. “I won’t get in the way. I’ll just sit here and be quiet, okay?”
Ethan strode over to Mia. He sounded annoyed but firm as he looked back at Chloe. “Stay here. I mean it.”
‘No way!” Chloe Bennett stomped her foot. “I don’t want to be away from you for even a second!”
Mia Carter stood to the side, clutching her bag as she watched the drama.
Ethan Hale stopped in his tracks. “You’re a high-society girl, Chloe, Running around in public all day? What would people think of me?”

That was exactly what Chloe wanted to hear. She pointed a finger right at Mia. “She’s a girl too! It looks trashy having her follow you everywhere. Take Leo Martinez instead. Leave her behind.”
“Are you really going to lower yourself to her level?” Ethan asked, his voice tight with the last shred of his patience.
Chloe couldn’t hide her smirk. She shot Mia a triumphant look.
I’d never compare myself to someone like her. But I still get jealous when you’re out with other women.”
Ethan reached out and patted her head. “Be a good girl. Go wait in the office.”
When he decided to be gentle, it was lethal.
Chloe practically melted. She felt like she’d just swallowed a spoonful of honey. Feeling smug and satisfied, she turned and headed back to the office.
Ethan turned back, his face instantly turning cold again. “Let’s go.”
“Okay,” Mia replied. She followed him, her movements stiff and robotic.
