“Is your husband not here with you today?”

The doctor looked over the ultrasound results and spoke without looking up. “The baby is developing perfectly. You’re a young mom, but it’s still best to involve the father in the pregnancy and the newborn phase.”

Mia’s smile turned stiff. “He’s… busy. He couldn’t make it.”

‘Well, for the 4D scan in a few weeks, you have to bring him,” the doctor insisted. “You’ll be able to see if the baby looks more like him or you. It’s a huge bonding moment for fathers.”

The OB-GYN was a woman in her forties, warm and soft-spoken.

You young parents today… you just don’t take this stuff seriously enough,” the doctor sighed. “You were alone at your last check-up, too. The father needs to be involved, honey. If he isn’t, you’re going to burn out. Besides, growing up without a father figure… it really takes a toll on a child.”

Mia just sat there, taking the lecture. She couldn’t even get a word in edgewise.

But every word the doctor said was hitting home, hard.

A world without a father… it would mess with the kid.

Even after she got to Nina’s place, the doctor’s voice was still playing on a loop in her head.

“Earth to Mia!” Nina waved a hand in front of her face. “Hello? I’m talking to you. What’s the game plan?”

The “plan.” It was the only thing Nina ever asked her about these days.

Mia shook off her thoughts and sighed. “I’m just waiting for an opening. If nothing comes up, I’ll have to wait until my contract is officially over to make my move.”

Her gut told her Chloe wouldn’t let her stay by Ethan’s side much longer anyway.

Nina sucked in a breath. “Aren’t you terrified he’ll find out?”

“Every single day,” Mia admitted with a nod. “The second I decided to keep this baby, I knew I was making a high-stakes gamble. The odds are against me right now, but that doesn’t mean I’ve lost the game.”

“Well, the goal is to get you out of there in one piece. If you can’t, then screw the job! What’s the worst that happens? You never work in that industry again?”

Nina thumped her chest confidently. “You can come do social media with me. I’ll take care of you. I’ve got your

back.”

Mia just smiled. A warm feeling washed over her, Nina always had her back.

But Nina didn’t understand, Mia’s contract with Bayview was ironclad. For someone in her position, the fine print was brutal: no quitting without a damn good reason.

If she walked, they’d sue her into the ground. She knew too many high-level secrets, and the Hales didn’t play fair.

“Fine, I’ll be your trophy friend,” Mia joked. “I’ll stay home, look pretty with the kids, and you can be the

breadwinner.”

“Give me your ultrasound report,” Nina said, holding out her hand. “I heard you can tell the gender from these things.”

She gestured for the papers.

Mia handed them over. “Boy or girl, I don’t care. As long as they’re healthy.”

“I’m rooting for a girl,” Nina said, scanning the scan. “Maybe the Hales are old-school sexists. If it’s a girl, they might not even try to take her from you. Plus, then she can marry my son!”

Mia shook her head, letting her play detective.

Nina spent ages squinting at the blurry image until her brain felt fried. She couldn’t tell a thing.

It was 8 PM by the time Mia headed home after dinner.

As she pulled into her complex, a sleek, navy blue supercar caught her eye. It was parked right in front of her building.

The window was halfway down. A soft blue light from the dashboard illuminated Jaxon’s dangerously handsome

face!

He turned his head and gave her a slow, wicked grin.

Her stomach dropped. She felt like she’d been targeted by a demon the kind you could never shake off.

Mia looked away, pretending she hadn’t seen him. She parked the car, grabbed her bag, and headed toward her apartment building.

‘Where did you go after your checkup?”

Jaxon Rivers hopped out of his car, moving fast to cut her off. He blocked the entrance before she could reach it.

“I’ve been waiting for you all day.”

Mia stopped, a wave of exhaustion hitting her. “Jaxon, look. Whatever beef you have with Ethan, leave me out of it. Using me won’t give you any leverage. You aren’t going to get to him through me.”
