Chapter 64

Hearing her drop the “Mr. Rivers” and snap his name like that made Jaxon’s eyes light up. He felt a weird surge of

excitement.

I’m not trying to use you to get under Ethan’s skin,” Jaxon said, his voice smooth. “I just want to be friends. I can back you up when Chloe gives you a hard time, and I get a front-row seat to the drama. It’s a win-win.”

Mia shook her head. “Friendship is a two-way street, Jaxon. And honestly? I’m not interested.”

laxor just smirked, unfazed. “Then I’ll just have to win you over. I don’t exactly need your permission to chase

you.”

Go back to the hospital,” Mia snapped, her expression souring. “Now move. I’m going home.”

f you’re still sick, stay in treatment. Why the hell are you even out here?

axon chuckled. “Fine. I won’t keep you from your rest. I’ll call you later.”

He stepped aside. Mia brushed past him and headed into the building without a single backward glance.

The second she walked through the door, she blocked Jaxon’s number.

0:00 AM. Bayview Tower, top-floor conference room.

behind his gold-rimmed glasses, Ethan Hale’s narrow eyes were dark as ink, sharp and focused as he scanned the partnership agreement with the Bennett family.

The room was packed with executives, all of them holding their breath, waiting for Ethan to give the word.

Ethan reached for his coffee, his long, lean fingers wrapping around the cup. He brought it to his lips, only to ealize it was bone dry.

Mia, get me another coffee,” he said, his voice casual but commanding.

The entire conference room went dead silent. Every eye in the room flicked toward Chloe Bennett, who was itting right next to him.

Chloe’s face turned a sickly shade of pale, her eyes wide with shock as she stared at Ethan.

Ethan didn’t even notice the tension. He was still buried in the paperwork.

When the room remained silent and no one moved, he finally frowned and looked up.

Mr. Hale, Mia is on sick leave today,” Leo Martinez cut in, breaking the awkward silence. “I’ll get that for you.”

Leo reacted quickly, stepping forward to grab the empty cup before hurrying out the door.

Ethan pulled off his glasses and rubbed the bridge of his nose. He looked over at Chloe, whose eyes were already >rimming with tears.

‘Force of habit,” he said, his voice flat and cold.

‘Mia has always been so efficient,” one of the executives chimed in immediately. “She’s your right hand, Mr. Hale. Honestly, we’re all struggling to get used to her being gone.”

A few others nodded in agreement right away.

Soon, half the room was backing her up.

“The six months she spent away from headquarters… it just felt like something was missing. Her work ethic is legendary.”

“Exactly. She’s the best in the business. Everyone misses having her around.”

Chloe’s eyes brimmed with tears. Just as they were about to spill over, she snapped to her feet.

“I’m tired. I’m going home!”

She bolted out of the meeting room and slammed right into Leo, who was heading back with a fresh coffee.

Leo jerked the cup toward himself to shield her. The scalding brown liquid splashed all over his chest, steam rising from his clothes.

“Shit!” He dropped the cup, frantically tearing off his jacket and fumbling with his shirt buttons.

“Oh my god, Leo! Are you okay?”

“Get to the restroom! Run cold water on it, now!”

The meeting room descended into chaos. Ethan stayed in his chair, his expression dark and heavy.
