“You’ve got the wrong person,” Mia said flatly.
Mia Carter handed over her card. “You’ve got the wrong person. My last name isn’t Carter.”
The clerk smiled and pulled a photo from her pocket. “Miss Carter, every employee in this mall has a copy of your picture.”
Mia’s features were too striking to mistake. She looked exactly like her photo. The second she’d walked into the mall, someone had spotted her and blasted it to the staff group chat.
‘Forget it. I don’t want the shoes anymore.” Mia dropped the boxes and turned to walk away.
The clerk scrambled to pick them up and chased her, shoving the bags into her hands. “Miss Carter, please! Mr. Rivers will have our heads if you don’t take these!”
‘Exactly. Please, don’t make our lives difficult!” another clerk added, blocking her path.
Mia knew Jaxon Rivers’s temper. He really would take it out on them.
They looked terrified, and Mia just felt a massive headache coming on.
Fine. I’ll pay Jaxon back myself.”
She took the shoes just so she could get out of there. Then, she drove straight to Bayview.
She arrived at the office and headed straight for the conference room, briefcase in hand.
The Project Manager was currently breaking down the core details of the Bennett family deal.
The meeting had been dragging on for ninety minutes. Ethan Hale was leaning back in his chair, legs crossed, ooking relaxed but dangerously sharp.
Mia pushed the door open, drawing everyone’s attention. She gave a professional nod and took her seat right next o Ethan.
‘Mr. Hale,” she whispered.
Ethan flicked his eyes toward her for a split second. That was the only acknowledgment she got.
‘Even though Bayview has handled dozens of projects like this, rest assured, Mr. Hale we aren’t taking this lightly. We’re making sure everything is rock solid to get this finished.”
The project manager felt the sweat. Having Ethan personally oversee this put a massive amount of him.
This partnership was everything to the Bennett family. It was their ticket to the big leagues.
For a powerhouse like Bayview, though? It wasn’t even worth the extra manpower.
But the partner was the Bennett family.
With Ethan sitting there in the flesh, the pressure in the room doubled.
Mia had arrived late, but she didn’t miss a beat.

She quickly noted the key points, organized them into a clean list, and turned her laptop toward Ethan.
“The department did their homework, Mr. Hale. It’s all here,” she whispered.
Ethan pulled the laptop over and gave the notes a cold, thorough look.
“He’s being so careful because it’s the Bennetts,” a voice whispered nearby.
“No kidding. If this weren’t their project, he would’ve chased Ms. Bennett down the second she ran out of here.”
“How’s Martinez’s burn, anyway?”
“He’ll be out for two or three days. Needs the wound to scab over so he can actually wear a shirt before he comes back to the office.”
The two people sitting next to Mia were talking in low voices.
Every word hit her ears. Mia turned her head and whispered, “What happened to Mr. Martinez?”
“He got burned,” the guy replied.
Mia was caught off guard. Leo was usually so composed and professional; how on earth did he manage to get burned by coffee?
The man looked like he wanted to say more, but he bit his tongue and stayed silent.
“Mia, double-check the details with the project department,” Ethan commanded. “Report back to me privately once you’ve confirmed everything. That’s all for today.”
Ethan snapped his laptop shut. He stood up, adjusted his suit jacket, and walked out of the conference room without a backward glance.
“Mr. Hale definitely couldn’t wait to go after Ms. Bennett,” Gonzalez said, walking over to Mia with a thick stack of files. “Now that you’re back, Mia, he finally has an excuse to bail.”
Mia’s heart gave a small, painful jolt. She watched Ethan’s retreating figure, his pace hurried and desperate.
She forced a faint, tight smile. “Mr. Gonzalez, let’s go over the details one more time. Sorry to keep you.”
“I’m telling you, I’ve seen Mr. Hale handle deals ten times bigger than this Bennett project, and he was never this obsessed. He mph!”
Before the man could finish his sentence, someone else clamped a hand over his mouth.
“You want to get fired? Shut up! If he hears you, you’re dead.”
The crowd eventually dispersed in small groups, leaving only Mia and a few people from the project team.
