Mia’s brows knitted together. Mr. Hale, I was transferred six months ago. I haven’t handled Headquartersbusiness in a long time. I can’t keep

up.

The lights in the secondfloor hallway were dim, casting Ethan’s chiseled face in shadows, making it impossible to read his expression. But his impatience was palpable.

Enough excuses. Get up here,he snapped, turning on his heel and striding back into his study.

Mia bit her lower lip, feeling the burning glares of Miranda and Chloe piercing her back.

Mia, just go!Lila hissed, practically dragging her toward the stairs. If you don’t, he’s going to force me to do it, and I’ll get chewed out!

Before Mia could protest, Lila shoved her into the luxurious, mahoganypaneled study and slammed the heavy door shut behind her.

Bang.

The loud sound made Ethan look up from his massive oak desk.

Mia stood awkwardly by the door. She was practically swallowed up in a cheap, baggy black puffer jacket and flat winter boots.

Ethan’s eyes narrowed. During their two years of marriageand her tenure as his top secretaryshe had never worn anything like this. Her uniform had always been sleek, tailored pencil skirts, silk blouses, and sharp stilettos. She was the epitome of a ruthless, gorgeous corporate boss.

Now, she looked like she was hiding her body.

You didn’t work today?Ethan asked, his deep voice slicing through the quiet room.

Mia instinctively tugged the zipper of her puffer jacket all the way to her chin, making absolutely sure the thick nylon hid the very slight bump of her sixweek pregnancy.

I did. I guess I’m just getting older. I’ve been freezing lately, she lied smoothly, taking a seat at the small table across from his desk. Should I fetch my laptop from the car?

Use mine,Ethan said, sliding his sleek silver MacBook across the desk.

Mia opened it. The wallpaper loaded, and her breath hitched.

It was a candid photo of Ethan and a woman with her back turned. Even without seeing the face, Mia recognized Chloe’s delicate frame instantly.

She forced her eyes away from the screen, opened a blank document, and transformed back into a machine.

As the international video conference began, the two of them fell into a terrifyingly perfect rhythm. With just one subtle twitch of Ethan’s brow, Mia knew exactly which executive to highlight for followup. A microscopic flick of his finger, and she muted a rambling manager to move on to the next slide.

Even after six months apart, their chemistry was undeniable. They breathed the same corporate air.

Without realizing it, the tension in Ethan’s jaw relaxed. His intense focus began to drift from the glowing screen… to Mia.

The study was heavily heated, easily pushing eighty degrees. Yet, Mia sat rigidly in her heavy winter coat. A thin layer of sweat beaded on her pale forehead. Her cheeks were flushed a deep, beautiful pink, and her long eyelashes fluttered rapidly as she typed.

Without the stiff business suits, she looked soft. Vulnerable.
