Chapter 9
The second Ethan officially ended the conference call, Mia slammed the laptop shut.
“The minutes are saved to your desktop. If there’s nothing else, Mr. Hale, I’ll be going.”
She didn’t wait for his dismissal. She practically bolted out of the study, desperate for fresh air.
As she hurried down the grand staircase, a blast of cold draft from a cracked window made her feel slightly less faint. But the violent churning in her stomach was only getting worse.
She picked up her pace, intending to slip out the front door without alerting the family in the living room.
But to get to the foyer, she had to pass the grand dining room.
The doors were wide open, and the maids were serving dinner. The heavy, rich scent of Miranda’s favorite milky seafood soup wafted directly into the hallway.
Normally, Mia loved that dish. But tonight, the intense, fishy aroma hit her senses like a physical blow.
Her world spun. Her stomach completely turned inside out.
Mia clamped a hand over her mouth, her eyes widening in horror as acid surged up her throat. She stumbled away from the dining room doors, violently pushing into the first–floor powder room.
Mia collapsed over the marble sink, her body racking with uncontrollable, agonizing dry heaves.
Footsteps pounded against the hardwood floor.
“Mia! Oh my god, are you okay?!” Mrs. Hale Sr. rushed in, gently rubbing Mia’s trembling back.
“Here, drink some water!” Lila frantically shoved a warm glass toward her.
Mia rinsed her mouth, her hands shaking so badly she almost dropped the glass. She forced the water down, desperately trying to suppress the rolling waves of morning sickness.
Then, Ethan’s terrifyingly loud voice cracked through the hallway like a whip.
“Martha! Get the prescription stomach medicine from the cabinet! Now!”
Mia whipped her head around. Ethan was standing in the doorway of the bathroom, his tall frame blocking her only exit. His brows were pulled together in deep, dark concern. Beside him stood Chloe, watching Mia with narrowed, highly suspicious eyes.
Medicine. The word echoed in Mia’s panicked brain.
Pregnant women couldn’t take those heavy prescription stomach pills. It could harm the baby.
“No! I–I don’t need medicine, Mia gasped out, her face deathly pale. She quickly grabbed her handbag from the counter, desperate to escape. I’m sorry for ruining dinner. It’s just a bug. I’ll buy something on the way home.”
She tried to push past them, but her trembling, sweaty fingers lost their grip.
Smash
Her designer handbag bit the hard marble floor. The clasp popped open, and the contents spilled violently across the polished tiles. Lipstick, car keys, a

The entire bathroom went dead silent
Chloe glanced down, a malicious smirk forming on her lips as the crouched to pick it up. She was ready to mock Mia for whatever cheap medicine she was taking
“A bug? Let’s see what you’re taking for a bug, Mia Chloe drawled, turning the bottle over to read the label
Suddenly, her arrogant smirk vanished. Her eyes widened in pure, unadulterated shock. The bottle slipped from her manicured fingers
Ethan’s sharp gaze caught the movement. He stepped forward, his massive frame towering over them, and snatched the bottle from the floor before anyone else could
