Annu
She stood in the taxi line for over an hour. When it was finally her turn to grab a cab, she realized she hadn’t even asked which hotel they were staying at.
She pulled out her phone and called Ethan. It rang twice before he hung up on her.
She tried again. This time, it went straight to voicemail. He’d turned his phone off.
“Hey, you getting in or what?” the driver barked.
Hey, you moving or what?” the guy behind her barked.
Mia stepped out of line. “Sorry. You go ahead.”
She ducked into a corner and pulled out her phone to call Leo.
Before she could even hit dial, a sleek black SUV pulled up right in front of her.
The window rolled down. Jaxon stared at her, looking shocked.
Ms. Carter? What the hell are you doing in Sunbrook?”
Mr. Rivers.” Mia realized it immediately. Ethan and Jaxon were definitely gunning for the same contract.
faxon caught on just as fast. “Ethan’s here, isn’t he?”
Mia stayed silent.
“The guy is like a damn shadow!” Jaxon’s face went dark. “I’m not letting him win this time. No way.”
Mia looked away, uncomfortable. She wasn’t about to say a word about Ethan.
Why are you at the taxi stand? Where’s Ethan?”
axon stepped out of the car. He looked at the two suitcases at her feet. “Chloe came too, didn’t she?” It wasn’t a question; he sounded certain.
Mia nodded.
‘And they just left you behind?”
She nodded again.
‘Get in. I’ll take you.” Jaxon signaled his driver to grab her bags.
‘No, I’m okay,”
Mia pulled her suitcases back toward her. “I’ve been waiting forever. I’ll just take a taxi.”
Jaxon didn’t take no for an answer. He snatched the suitcases out of her hands and shoved them toward the driver.
“Just get in the car. He had the balls to ditch you here stop worrying about him.”
The driver tossed both suitcases into the trunk and hopped back into the front seat.
Mia didn’t really have a choice anymore.

She slid into the back, sitting right next to Jaxon.
“So, did Ethan tell you his plan for this project?” Jaxon asked.

The car pulled away from the airport. Streetlights flickered past, their glow cutting through the windows in rhythmic bursts.
ני
It was dim inside the cabin, and the air was thick with tension. Mia sat stiffly, feeling completely out of place in
his car.
Jaxon was the first to speak, breaking the silence.
‘Mr. Hale didn’t say anything to me. And even if he did, I wouldn’t be able to tell you.”
Mia wasn’t about to break professional ethics.
You’re so loyal to him as a boss, but what does he think of you?”
Jaxon was clearly trying to get under her skin. “It’s the middle of the night, and he just dumps a girl like you at an airport a thousand miles from home.”
Mia was fidgeting with the little plush keychain on her bag. Her grip tightened the second he said that.
Her voice remained flat. “It doesn’t matter what he thinks of me. All that matters is that I know my place.”
Poor thing.” Jaxon leaned back and looked at her. Her profile was bathed in the dim light, looking lonely. “You’re gorgeous, Mia. If Ethan isn’t interested in you, is he just… broken downstairs?”
Mia shot him a sharp look.
just as she expected, she saw the calculation in his eyes.
He was digging trying to figure out if Ethan actually had any feelings for her that went beyond professional boundaries.
Mr. Rivers, knock it off. Those jokes aren’t funny.”
laxon was pretty sure he’d finally found Ethan’s Achilles’ heel.
But looking at Mia, she didn’t seem to give a damn. Nothing in her reaction suggested they were a thing.
They weren’t even on the same page, which made it impossible for him to find a way in.
Since Mia wouldn’t budge, Jaxon stopped pushing,
Mia shot Leo a text. He sent over the hotel name, and she relayed the address to the driver.
As luck would have it, Jaxon was staying at the same place.
The two of them hopped out at the entrance and walked into the lobby, only to run smack into Ethan as he stepped out of the elevator.
