Ethan’s amber eyes darkened instantly.
He walked toward them on those long legs of his, stopping dead in the middle of the lobby.
Mia had been careful to keep a respectful distance from Jaxon the whole time.
But the second Jaxon saw Ethan, he deliberately leaned in closer to her,
“Mr. Hale! What a small world, running into you all the way out here,” Jaxon said, his voice dripping with mock friendliness. “Must be fate.”
Jaxon shoved his hands in his pockets, a cocky smirk playing on his lips. He was clearly trying to get a rise out of
him.
Ethan’s expression stayed stone-cold, completely unreadable. “I knew you were coming, Jaxon. That’s exactly why I’m here.”
[axon’s eyes narrowed as his mind raced. “You’re here to hijack my project!?”
May the best man win,” Ethan replied flatly. “I wouldn’t call it hijacking if you can’t keep up.’
Ethan stood tall and straight, his gaze flickering over to Mia every few seconds.
axon gritted his teeth, glaring at Ethan.
Mia stood between them, caught in the crossfire of their stares. The massive lobby suddenly felt like a furnace.
A receptionist, completely oblivious to the tension, walked over with a bright smile. “Good evening, sir, ma’am. Do you have a reservation?”
axon’s serious face crumbled instantly. A smug, punchable smirk spread across his face as he latched onto that last
word.
“Ma’am, huh? What do you think, Mia? Should we get a room with a King-sized bed?”
The misunderstanding made Mia’s skin crawl with anxiety.
She gave Jaxon a stiff nod. “Thank you for the ride, Mr. Rivers. It’s getting late, so I’ll let you get some rest. I won’t
ake up any more of your time.”
She pulled out her ID and handed it to the receptionist. “I have a reservation.”
‘Oh, my apologies. I misunderstood,” the receptionist said, quickly catching the hint and leading her toward the front desk to finish the paperwork.
Jaxon followed her, raising his voice so it carried. “Text me your room number when you’re settled. I’ll come find
you.”
He shot a taunting sidelong glance at Ethan,
Mia took a step away, maintaining a safe distance from him.
She didn’t care if Ethan misunderstood, but Jaxon was his biggest rival. Professionally speaking, she shouldn’t be seen getting anywhere near him.

Jaxon was the type who only got more worked up the more you responded. She stayed silent, hoping to starve his ego.
Ethan knew Jaxon better than anyone. He had to know the guy was just trying to get a rise out of him.
I’m so sorry, Miss Carter, but a Ms. Bennett has already checked into your suite.”
The clerk gave Mia a sympathetic look before adding, “Mr. Hale authorized the change.”
“Fine. Then please just get me another room.”
“Of course. Another presidential suite?” the clerk asked, her fingers already flying over the keyboard.
Mia pulled her card from her purse and slid it across the counter. “A standard room is fine. Just give me the receipt.”
Jaxon suddenly snatched the card out of her hand. “Upgrade her to the presidential suite right next to mine. Put it on my tab.”
“Jaxon, stop it. This isn’t right.” Mia reached for her card, but Jaxon held it high over his head, keeping it way out of her reach.
She couldn’t get it back and could only hiss at him, “Jaxon, I’m serious! Stop messing around!”
He looked down at her, his expression mock-serious. “I’m not playing. It would break my heart to see you in a basic room…”
They were whispering, but they were so close that Ethan caught every single word.
He cut a sharp look toward them. The way they were standing, the way they were bickering they looked exactly like a couple flirting.
“Don’t bother,” Ethan snapped, his voice cutting through the air like a blade. “She’s staying in the original room.” Mia turned to face him, frowning. “But Ms. Bennett is already in there”
Ethan didn’t even look at him. “She’s staying with me. Once the paperwork is done, have Chloe’s bags sent to my suite.”
