Chapter 87
“Don’t sweat it. Your health comes first.”
Jaxon Rivers leaned one hand against the doorframe, giving her a bright, cocky grin.
Why wouldn’t he be fine with it?
The later Mia Carter woke up, the more her work got delayed. And the more it benefited him.
“Mr. Rivers,” Mia said, her voice laced with urgency the moment she saw him. “Is there something you need?”
Jaxon tossed his hair back. “Come on. Let’s grab lunch.”
Mia shook her head. “I don’t have time.”
She instinctively glanced at the door across the hall. It was shut tight.
Had Ethan Hale already left for his meetings?
‘Oh, you’ve got time.” Jaxon pointed a thumb over his shoulder at the door across from her without even looking pack. “Ethan is still busy in his little love nest. He ordered two steaks for room service for lunch.”
Mia’s heart skipped a beat, then went cold. Her nerves vanished instantly.
Her grip on the doorknob tightened as her expression went flat. “In that case, I’m going back to sleep.”
She tried to swing the door shut, but Jaxon blocked it with his arm. “Don’t bother. He probably went so hard on Chloe Bennett that she can’t even get out of bed, which is why they’re eating in. But that doesn’t mean he’s taking the day off work.”
When it came to twisting the knife, Jaxon was an absolute pro.
‘Go get ready and meet me downstairs for lunch. If he calls you for work, you’ll be right there and ready.”
The refusal died in Mia’s throat. Suddenly, her eyes darted to something behind Jaxon. “Mr. Hale,” she breathed.
Jaxon whipped his head around instantly.
There was no one behind him.
Bam. Mia slammed the door shut.
“You’ve spent too much time around Ethan. You’re getting mean…”
Jaxon’s frustrated voice drifted through the wood.
Mia went back to the bed and grabbed her phone. Nothing from Ethan.
Jaxon’s words sat heavy in her chest. She rolled over and closed her eyes, trying to force herself to sleep.
Jaxon didn’t linger. He called her name a couple more times and then finally left.
But a moment later, there was another knock. It was soft not on her door, but the one across the hall.
Room service. Their lunch had arrived.
Mia tossed and turned, but sleep was a lost cause now. Her stomach started growling, demanding to be fed.

Meril
She finally gave up, got dressed, and headed downstairs to the restaurant to find something to eat.
It wasn’t quite noon yet, so the place wasn’t crowded.
Mia was dressed down in casual clothes with her hair pulled back into a messy ponytail. But with her looks, she was still a total knockout. It was impossible not to notice her.
The restaurant was huge, but Jaxon spotted her the second she walked in.
‘Mia! Over here!”
[axon didn’t have a volume filter. He shouted across the room, not caring who was listening.
in an instant, every head in the place turned toward her.
Mia followed the sound of his voice, but Jaxon wasn’t the first person who caught her eye.
Ethan was there, wearing a simple white tee and light gray pants.
The lighter colors softened his usual cold vibe, making him look almost… approachable.
