Chapter 86
Mia practically ran down the quiet hotel corridor, slipping into her own room and locking the door behind her. She collapsed onto the sofa, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. Ethan’s suit jacket still engulfed her, carrying the intoxicating, heavy scent of cedarwood and mint.
Her phone buzzed, shattering the silence. It was a FaceTime call from Nina.
Seeing Mia huddled on the sofa clutching a men’s suit jacket, Nina’s eyes widened. “Don’t tell me you’re in the same room as Ethan.”
No way,” Mia denied instantly, pulling the jacket tighter around herself. “He’s staying across the hall in the presidential suite. Chloe is with him.”
Nina’s voice practically exploded from the phone. “Chloe is there, too?! What the hell is wrong with Ethan? Bringing his ex-wife and his current girl on the same business trip? That’s a total shitshow. You need to quit, Mia. Like, now.”
Mia’s lips twitched into a dry, bitter smile. “In his eyes, the ‘ex-wife’ role doesn’t even exist.”
They talked until the sky outside began to turn a pale gray. Exhausted to her bones, Mia finally crashed, the ingering scent of Ethan’s cologne pulling her into a deep, dreamless sleep.
The incessant ringing of the doorbell woke her
Mia jerked her eyes open. Bright sunlight flooded the room. She checked the time-it was nearly ten o’clock! She scrambled out of bed, threw on a fresh, loose-fitting blouse, and rushed to open the door.
‘Sorry, Mr. Hale. I overslept-”
‘Don’t sweat it. Your health comes first,” Jaxon Rivers said, leaning casually against the doorframe with a bright, cocky grin.
Mia’s shoulders slumped. “Mr. Rivers. Is there something you need?”
Jaxon tossed his hair back. “Come on. Let’s grab lunch.”
“I don’t have time,” Mia shook her head, instinctively glancing at the heavy oak door across the hall. It was shut tight. Had Ethan already left for his meetings?
“Oh, you’ve got time.” Jaxon pointed a thumb over his shoulder at Ethan’s suite. “Ethan is still busy in his little love nest. He ordered two steaks for room service for lunch.”
Mia’s heart skipped a beat, then went completely cold.
“Don’t bother waiting on him,” Jaxon continued, his voice dripping with deliberate mockery. “He probably went so hard on Chloe Bennett last night that she can’t even get out of bed, which is why they’re eating in.”
Jaxon was an absolute pro at twisting the knife. A sharp, stinging ache bloomed in Mia’s chest, but she forced her face to remain a blank, professional mask.
“I’m going to get my own lunch,” Mia said flatly. She stepped out, pulling her door shut and walking past him
toward the elevators.

It wasn’t quite noon yet, so the hotel restaurant wasn’t crowded. Mia scanned a QR code at a quiet corner table, ordering a light, pregnancy-safe meal.
“Mia! Over here!”
Jaxon had followed her down. He shouted across the dining room, devoid of any volume filter. Every head in the place turned toward them.
Mia followed the sound of his voice, but Jaxon wasn’t the first person who caught her eye.
Ethan Hale was sitting at a premium table near the window. He was dressed down in a simple white tee and light gray slacks, the lighter colors softening his usual cold vibe. Chloe Bennett sat right next to him, sipping a glass of
water.
Weren’t they supposed to be eating room service in bed? Mia thought, a flicker of confusion crossing her mind.
Before she could retreat, Jaxon marched over and pulled out the chair directly across from Ethan. “Sit, Mia.”
Mia hesitated, but the damage was already done. She walked over, keeping her eyes averted. “I don’t want to crash your lunch, Mr. Hale, Ms. Bennett.”
Chloe let out a soft, mocking laugh. She leaned toward Ethan, her tone teasing. “Looks like Jaxon is really into
our secretary, Ethan. She must be thrilled to finally have a rich man looking her way.”
