The air in the car felt thick, heavy with a tension that seemed to fill every inch of the cabin.
She stared out the window, waiting for Ethan Hale to bring up work.
Thirty minutes later, the Cullinan pulled up at Sunbrook Pavilion.
Even after they arrived, Ethan hadn’t said a single word about the job.
He climbed out and headed straight into the building.
Mia hurried after him, catching up in a few quick strides. “Mr. Hale, I’ve got the data organized. Do you want to look it over?”
‘No need,” Ethan said, the words short and blunt.
In all her years working for him, Mia had never made a mistake. A simple data report was child’s play for her.
His absolute confidence made her hesitate for a beat before she regained her composure and followed him in.
Sunbrook was the crown jewel of the South’s development a land of opportunity that every major player wanted a piece of.
Ethan was here to meet Marcus Ford, the man running the expansion in the region.
Marcus was in his forties and was essentially the top dog in Sunbrook.
Mia had assumed Ethan came prepared with a solid proposal, ready to sign the deal then and there.
But once they sat down and she heard Ethan talking to Marcus, she realized she was wrong. Ethan hadn’t even decided which sector he wanted to corner yet.
She remembered overhearing Jaxon Rivers on the phone while they were out yesterday. She hadn’t caught the letails, but she could tell Jaxon had come to town with his homework done and was ready to strike.
Mia Carter was still lost in thought when Ethan Hale and Marcus Ford finished their conversation. They stood up
and shook hands.
Mia had been like a piece of background furniture the entire time. She stood up and followed suit, shaking Marcus’s hand.
‘It’s not every day you’re in Sunbrook, Mr. Hale,” Marcus said. “I’ve already made arrangements. Let me show you
good time today.”
After a quick handshake with Mia, Marcus turned his full attention back to Ethan to extend the invitation.
Ethan usually blew off these kinds of social events, but surprisingly, he agreed immediately. “I appreciate it, Mr. Ford. Lead the way.”
“My pleasure,” Marcus said, gesturing for them to follow him out of the building.
The
group had just stepped out of Sunbrook Pavilion when they saw Jaxon Rivers getting out of a car.
In a professional setting, Jaxon actually looked somewhat respectable. He walked toward Marcus with a slight smirk and a nod.

Marcus’s face lit up as he reached out to shake hands. “Mr. Rivers. I’ve heard a lot about you.”
“Don’t believe everything you read in the tabloids, Mr. Ford. I’m actually a decent guy.”
Jaxon’s reputation was anything but clean. If he wasn’t caught drunk at a club, he was making headlines for street
racing.
He shot Ethan a playful look. “Mr. Hale didn’t talk any shit about me, did he?”
Ethan’s lips twitched, but he didn’t give him a response. Instead, he looked back at Mia and signaled for her to keep up.
He turned and headed for the car. Mia gave Marcus a polite nod and hurried after him.
They stopped by the SUV, and Ethan pulled out a cigarette, lighting it up. “We’re going to the hot springs next.”
“Hot springs?” Mia’s brow furrowed, “Can I sit this one out?”
Small
spas banned pregnant women entirely. The high-end ones were even worse they had dedicated “maternity pools” with non-slip floors and specialized temperatures.
Either way, Mia couldn’t go. Not without exposing her secret.
“No.” Ethan’s eyes flicked to her collar, buttoned tight to the top. “Mrs. Ford will be there. Work your magic.”
In the business world, a woman’s touch could change everything.
