Adrian stirred beside me, still deep in sleep, one arm stretched across the space I had just left. I glanced at the clock on his nightstand. It was already 6:30 am.
My mind was racing too fast to even process the fact that I was in his bed, in his house, wearing absolutely nothing under his sheets. All I could think about was Emma, something happened? that was what Amanda’s text said, and those three words alone were enough to send my heart slamming against my chest.
Before I could even reply, I was already moving, sliding out of the bed as quietly as I could, my bare feet touching the cold floor. I grabbed my bag from where I had dropped it the night before and pulled out my dress, my hands fumbling with the fabric as I tried to be fast without making noise.
There was a door on the far side of the room that I guessed led to the restroom, and I was right. I slipped inside and shutt gently behind me, my heart still hammering as I changed as quickly as my shaking hands would allow.
When I looked up into the mirror. 1 froze for a second. There, along the side of my neck and collarbone, were faint marks. touched one lightly with my fingers and the memories from last night flooded back so fast it almost made me dizzy, his mouth on my skin. his voice low in my ear, the way he had said my name while stroking me deeply. My worry for Emma was still sitting heavy in my chest, but somehow, despite everything. I couldn’t stop the small smile that crept onto my face.
“Get yourself together.” I shook my head at myself and focused. This was not the time.
I pulled my phone out and typed as fast as my fingers would let me.
What happened?” I sent it to Amanda, already opening the cab app with my other hand, trying to do both things at once.
The reply came almost instantly. “I got to your house and I couldn’t find your sister. Then another message right after. before I could even fully process the first one. “I mean… you left with the CEO, I wasn’t expecting to meet you but I couldn’t find her
I read it again, slower this time, and felt the tight knot in my chest start to loosen just a little. It wasn’t what I feared, how didn’t I think deeply about it before. Emma wasn’t hurt, Emma wasn’t missing in any real sense.
Amanda had simply gotten there and panicked when the house looked empty, not knowing that Emma had not been at home since yesterday evening, she has been under Adrian’s care.
A notification popped up, and my cab had arrived. I looked back toward the bedroom door, listening for any sound from the other side, but there was nothing, just silence. I gathered the rest of my things quickly and tiptoed out, easing the door shut behind me so carefully it barely made a click.
The hallway felt longer walking through it alone than it had the night before with Adrian’s hand in mine. I moved quietly down the stairs, through the wide, quiet living room, past the kitchen that still had no signs of anyone else in the house, and finally to the front door
Outside, the morning air was cool against my skin, and the sky was still holding onto the last bit of gray before the sun fully took over A man was standing by the gate already, dressed simply, and I hadn’t even noticed him the night before in all the excitement of arriving
He looked up when he heard my footsteps and smiled politely, pulling the gate open for me without a single question, like this was something he did often, women slipping out of that house at dawn was nothing new to him.
I gave him a small nod too embarrassed to say much else, and hurried through toward the waiting cab. I climbed in and let or a long breath the second the door closed behind me. resting my head back against the seat as the driver pulled off
My mind was still a mess, equal parts relief over Emma and something warmer, sitting right underneath it whenever I

thought about Adrian’s hands or his voice or the way he had looked at me before we fell asleep.

The ride to my building didn’t take long, I paid the driver, thanked him quickly, and walked straight up to my door, my keys already out and ready. Amanda’s car was parked in its usual spot, which meant she was already inside waiting, probably had
been for a while.
I unlocked the door and stepped in and Amanda was seated on the couch, legs crossed, phone in hand, but the moment she heard the door she looked up, and a slow, knowing smile spread across her face.
“Look who finally remembered she had a house,” she said, turning fully toward me now, her eyebrows raised so high they nearly disappeared into her hairline.
“Hi Amanda,” I said, keeping my voice as calm and even as I possibly could, like I hadn’t just spent the last twenty minutes in a cab trying to smooth down my hair and hide the marks on my neck with my scarf.
She burst out laughing, I had to press my lips together hard to keep from smiling too, though I doubt I did a very good job of it.
“I have to prepare for work.” I said quickly, already moving past her toward my bathroom, tugging the hem of my dress down slightly, suddenly very aware of how it clung to me after a night like the one I just had.
“Go ahead.” Amanda said, waving a hand toward my room, but there was no missing the glint in her eyes. “While you start explaining how everything started.”
“Argghhh. Amanda.” I groaned, dragging the sound out as disappeared into the kitchen first before walking to the bathroom, already knowing there was no escaping this conversation, not today, maybe not for the rest of the week.
“You should be happy I’m not even offended, she called after me, her voice carrying easily through the thin wall between us.
I shut my door and leaned against it for a moment, letting out a breath. Any reflection in the small mirror across the room caught my eye again, hair a mess, scarf slightly crooked, the faint marks still peeking out no matter how I tried to cover them.
I reached for my phone to check on Emma properly, to hear her voice and make sure everything really was fine, but before 1 could even open her contact, a new message lit up my screen.
It wasn’t from Emma, It wasn’t from Amanda either. I mean… Amanda can be silly sometimes but this time, it wasn’t her. It was from Adrian.
“You forgot some things again,” it read, and my stomach flipped. Right underneath that first message, a second one was already coming through, the three dots blinking as he typed.
