The words died in Chloe's throat. Her heart skipped a beat, and she nervously gripped the fabric of her dress.
The cameras... No, Archer absolutely could not see that footage!
Swallowing her bitter frustration, she lowered her head, playing the part of a fragile, overwhelmed victim.
"Archer, I... I don't feel well. Can you take me home?"
Archer didn't respond to her. Instead, he looked at Doctor White.
Doctor White gave him a curt nod, his expression sour.
Archer pressed his lips into a thin line, returned the nod respectfully, and turned on his heel.
Chloe's expression shifted wildly before she finally hiked up her skirt and jogged after him.
...
Archer showed up at Virginia's apartment just as the sun set.
When she opened the door, the faint scent of medicinal ointment drifted into the hallway.
He looked down, his eyes immediately drawn to the thick layer of burn cream smeared across her pale forearm and hand.
His gaze darkened. He opened his mouth but couldn't seem to find his voice.
Virginia frowned. She stared at the tall man standing impeccably in his dark suit, her eyes clear and unapproachably distant.
Without a word, he held out a small pharmacy bag.
It was a pharmacy bag.
"Burn cream and anti-inflammatories."
Virginia didn't take it. "Did you really come all the way over here just to drop off a bag of medicine?"
Archer set the bag down just inside her doorway and took a half-step back. "About today... I'm sorry."
"...Don't be." Virginia cut him off, her voice entirely devoid of emotion. "Whatever happens between Chloe and me is none of your business."
