Cynthia grew confused. "Is the signal gone? Mr. Archer? Are you still there?"

"I'm here," he replied, his fist clenched tight, his voice dropping low. "Who told you that?"

"Grandma! Grandma said Mommy is on a blind date today, and if it works out, that person is gonna be Mommy's boyfwend." Cynthia scrunched her little nose. "Mr. Archer, what does boyfwend mean?"

There was no sound from the other end of the line.

"Mr. Archer..."

"Cindy. The next time Mommy has a date, call me. I'll explain exactly what a boyfriend is then."

Nathan asked Virginia out for dinner at a downtown Japanese restaurant.
