Archer's gaze turned impossibly dark as he brought the cigarette to his lips and took a long drag.

He hadn't even begun to untangle the suffocating weight building in his chest when he saw Valentin pick up a glass of juice from the table and hand it to her.

Smiling, she took it without a second thought and took a sip, looking completely at ease.

Then, the man in the gold-rimmed glasses across from her seemed to crack a joke, and her lips curled upward as she let out a soft laugh.

Her smile was radiant and entirely relaxed.

It was nothing like the woman he had seen at the Caldwell estate.

The cigarette burned down to his knuckles, the searing heat snapping him violently back to reality.

He dropped the cigarette, crushed it beneath his shoe, and looked up, his face already locked back into its usual mask of icy indifference.

He was just about to head back to his own room when someone blocked his path.

"Archer, you don't look too good. Everything alright?" It was Logan Lambert.

"I'm fine, let's go ba—"

Before he could finish the sentence, Logan seemed to spot something. Frowning, he pointed toward the gap in the door.

"That woman..."

He leaned closer, peering through the crack into the adjacent room, a flash of surprise crossing his eyes.

"Archer, why does she look so familiar? She looks a bit like your ex-wife..."

Archer's eyes went dangerously dark. He reached up to tug at his collar, not letting a single emotion show on his face.

"You're seeing things."

The words shot out of his mouth, sharp and decisive.

Logan opened his mouth to argue, but seeing Archer's stoic expression remain as unshakable as ever, he wisely shut it. Inwardly, however, he couldn't help but wonder.

He had known this untouchable aristocrat for nearly twenty years, and never once had he seen him standing alone in a hallway, smoking in such profound isolation.
