His Wicked Obsession (Archer and Virginia) novel Chapter 129

Having said his piece, Logan hung up the phone before Virginia could even refuse.

Done with his task, he shoved the phone back into Archer's pocket and gave him a long, meaningful look.

"This is as far as I can help you, buddy."

...

At the apartment.

Virginia stared blankly at the disconnected tone buzzing in her ear for several seconds.

She had been back at her apartment for less than ten minutes and hadn't even had the chance to take off her makeup when she received this baffling call.

Snapping out of it, she furrowed her brows and dialed Archer's number first. The line rang and rang—no answer.

Refusing to give up, she tried again.

Still no answer.

Taking a deep breath, she dug up Zachary Cole's number and dialed.

Zachary picked up surprisingly fast. "Miss Caldwell? It's quite late. Is there something you need?"

"Your boss is drunk at The Summit Club. You need to go pick him up quickly, otherwise he's going to end up on..."

The other end of the line went dead silent for a second. Before she could finish, Zachary's deeply apologetic voice cut in.

"Miss Caldwell, I'm actually out of town on a business trip. There's no way I can make it back in time... You're the only one who knows where the boss is right now. I'm afraid you'll have to make the trip."

Virginia clutched her phone, falling into a tense, frowning silence.

Zachary quickly added, "You know the boss rarely drinks. If you get there too late, I'm genuinely terrified something might happen to him..."

"...Fine."

Virginia took a deep breath, hung up the phone, and turned right back around to head out the door, pulling up a ride-share app on her phone.

What she didn't know was that the moment Zachary set his phone down, he immediately wiped imaginary sweat from his forehead.

He wasn't on a business trip at all. He just didn't dare ruin his boss's perfect setup.

...

Third floor of The Summit Club, The Whispering Pines Room.

When Virginia pushed the door open, Archer was the only one left inside.

He was half-slouched against the sofa, his long legs finding no comfortable place to rest, merely draped haphazardly over the armrest.
