The arrival was Helena Vanderbilt.
She strolled in gracefully, a beige lambskin Louis Vuitton bag hooked in the crook of her arm, followed closely by two assistants carrying her purchases.
She walked in, her gaze lingering on Virginia for a fraction of a second before dropping to the gown in Chelsea's hands.
Piecing together the snippet of conversation she had overheard with the expression on Virginia's face, she easily guessed what was happening.
"M-Mrs. Vanderbilt," Chelsea stuttered, unable to meet her eyes. She bowed her head slightly, her voice dropping an octave in sheer intimidation.
Helena ignored her completely. She walked straight up to Virginia, reached out, and patted her hand affectionately. "Is this yours?"
Virginia blanked for a second before nodding.
Helena asked no further questions. She spun around to face Chelsea, her smile polite but devoid of warmth, her tone brokering no argument. "Put the dress down."
"Mrs. Vanderbilt, I..."
"You're from the Preston family, aren't you?" With just a glance from Helena, one of her assistants immediately stepped forward, snatched the dress from Chelsea, and offered it respectfully to Helena.
Helena briefly inspected the fabric before handing it back to the attendant. "It's entirely wrinkled. Please have it steamed immediately."
The attendant took it in a state of sheer shock, practically running off in terror.
She had never witnessed such a terrifying clash of titans.
The older woman's background easily eclipsed Miss Preston's, and she was so clearly defending Ms. Caldwell. Who knew if Ms. Caldwell would decide to hold a grudge...
Chelsea stood frozen in place, her face flushing crimson, then paling.
Who was Helena Vanderbilt?
The reigning matriarch of the Vanderbilt family. Even Chelsea's grandfather had to bow his head and respectfully address her as "Madam."
Chelsea managed a strained, ghastly smile and swallowed hard. "Well then, Mrs. Vanderbilt, I'll be going now. Take your time."
Before she even finished speaking, she had already spun around and bolted for the door. The aggressive clicking of her heels on the tile floor echoed twice as fast as when she arrived.
