Virginia didn't stop walking. The moment she stepped through the doorway, a highly familiar figure caught her eye.
Tall and broad-shouldered, Archer stood in the center of the massive kitchen. A dark apron was tied securely around his waist, and the sleeves of his charcoal dress shirt were rolled up past his forearms.
His cooking movements weren't exactly effortless, but his intense focus made up for it. He executed every step as if running a highly complex corporate algorithm.
Hearing her footsteps, he turned his head. A faint ripple crossed his eyes when he saw her. "It's almost done."
"Do you need any help?"
Virginia felt a sudden wave of awkwardness.
Archer rarely ever visited the main estate, let alone cooked. She had never expected to find him manning the stove.
"No need. You can step..."
Before he could finish, Cindy bounded into the kitchen doorway, standing on her tiptoes to peek inside while taking a deep, dramatic sniff.
"It smells so good! Mr. Archer makes the best-smelling food!"
Archer glanced down at her, his stern expression softening drastically. With practiced calm, he plated a gorgeous serving of BBQ ribs.
Turning around, he pulled a steaming bowl from the oven. It was a creamy, perfectly baked mac and cheese, drizzled with organic sauce and topped with a delicate layer of crispy breadcrumbs.
"This one is yours." He carried the mac and cheese to the dining table, setting it precisely in front of the child's booster seat.
Cindy obediently scrambled into her chair, folding her hands as she waited for the meal to begin.
After a brief moment of internal debate, Virginia stepped into the kitchen, taking the initiative to help carry the rest of the dishes and set the silverware.
Once everything was ready, she took the seat next to Helena.
Archer walked out carrying the final bowl of soup. As he passed behind Virginia, his forearm brushed lightly against her shoulder. She couldn't tell if it was intentional.
She stiffened instantly, freezing in place and refusing to look up.
Acting as if nothing had happened, he casually took the seat right next to Cindy.
Throughout the meal, his movements were elegant and lazy, yet he constantly made sure Cindy was taken care of. Whenever he served her a rib, he meticulously removed the bone first, placing only the tender meat into her bowl.
