It wasn't until the little girl was rubbing her eyes with exhaustion that he stood up, grabbed his jacket, and said his goodbyes.
"It's getting late, I should head out. I'll pick Cindy up tomorrow so you don't have to rush."
Walking him to the door, Virginia hesitated.
"Archer."
He paused, not turning around.
"...You don't have to do all this."
He didn't reply, simply stepping out the door and walking away.
Right before the door clicked shut, Virginia noticed his fingers gripping his car keys with bone-crushing force.
What she didn't know was that Archer had ordered Zachary to investigate the mastermind behind the mob.
Unfortunately, the trail went cold at a critical moment, dead-ending at an offshore bank account. Finding any valuable leads in the short term would be impossible.
By the time Archer arrived home, it was nearly eleven at night.
Chloe was sitting cross-legged on the living room sofa in a pale yellow silk nightgown, flipping through sheet music. Hearing the door open, she looked up and flashed him a sweet, obedient smile.
"Archer, you're back? I kept some soup warm for you in the kitchen..."
She practically glided over to him, naturally reaching out to take his suit jacket, but he smoothly stepped half a pace back.
Her hands froze mid-air.
Although she hadn't touched him, she caught a whiff of a scent that didn't belong to him—the faint aroma of white tea.
It was Virginia's signature perfume, the same scent she had worn throughout their entire marriage. It was a premium white tea fragrance—not a ridiculously expensive brand, but highly recognizable.
The fingers gripping the hem of Chloe's nightgown tightened, her perfectly manicured nails practically tearing into the silk.
She tilted her head up, maintaining a flawless, affectionate smile.
"The soup is still simmering on the stove, let me go get you a bowl."
Archer hummed a brief acknowledgment, slipped into his house slippers, and headed straight upstairs.
The second Chloe turned her back, the gentle sweetness on her face vanished without a trace.
In the kitchen, she picked up a ladle to serve the soup, but with a gaze full of sheer venom, she violently hurled the ladle back into the pot.
