Virginia stiffened slightly. "Archer, let go."
"I won't." Archer tightened his grip. His lips brushed against her earlobe, his warm breath sending a shiver through her. "Virginia, you might not believe this, but after the divorce, I regretted it. I missed this taste every single day."
She lowered her lashes to conceal the flicker of emotion in her eyes and reminded him, "Your soup is getting cold."
Archer seemed surprised by her composure. A complicated look crossed his eyes before he finally released her. He picked up the bowl and downed the rest of the soup in one go.
Later that night.
Virginia had just finished her shower when the master bedroom door cracked open. Cynthia Caldwell wandered in, clutching a stuffed bunny and rubbing her eyes.
"Mommy, I want to sleep with you guys."
The little girl was dressed in pink pajamas. Her voice was sweet and drowsy, entirely unfazed by the fact that they were sharing a bed.
Hearing this, the tips of Virginia's ears grew hot. Dressed in her silk pajamas, she walked over, ready to ask if something was wrong.
Archer, who had been scrolling through emails from Zachary, heard the little girl. Without a word, he set his tablet aside and lifted a corner of the blanket.
Cynthia waddled over on her short little legs, climbed onto the bed, and settled right into the spot between them.
As soon as Virginia got into bed, the little girl rolled over and expertly snuggled into her mother's arms.
"Mr. Vanderbilt, let me tell you a secret," the little girl mumbled from the safety of Virginia's embrace.
"Mommy was in a really good mood today. When she's happy, she makes really yummy soup..."
Cynthia was clearly exhausted. She forced the words out, her voice thick with sleep.
Archer shot Virginia a glance, a hint of amusement lingering in his eyes. "Is that so? Then I'll make sure Mommy is happy every single day from now on. How does that sound?"
"...Good."
Just as he thought the little girl had faded out, she let out a soft murmur before her breathing fell into a steady, rhythmic pattern.
The bedside lamp was dimmed. Archer couldn't clearly make out Virginia's expression, but watching the serene profiles of the mother and daughter lying next to him struck a chord.
He felt a strange, profound sense of peace.
