"Dr. Shaw."
They both looked up to see Archer standing just steps away, a retinue of suited corporate executives trailing behind him.
He was dressed in a tailored, jet-black suit. A dangerous storm was rapidly brewing in his dark eyes.
Seeing this, Zachary was too terrified to even breathe. Using his incredible situational awareness, he quickly muttered a few words to the executives, and they promptly turned and scurried away.
Archer strode forward on his long legs. With terrifying naturalness, he reached out and pulled Virginia away from Kian, planting his large hand firmly on her waist.
His grip was a little tight, seething with a possessiveness he had never shown before.
Virginia frowned but didn't struggle, quietly allowing him to hold her.
"Thank you for catching my wife, Dr. Shaw. Virginia and I will have to treat you to dinner sometime." Archer looked at Kian, his tone flat but suffocating with the authority of an alpha.
Kian adjusted his glasses, his expression completely unfazed.
"There's no need, Mr. Vanderbilt. Virginia and I are colleagues. Looking out for her is a given."
Their eyes clashed, sparks of invisible hostility igniting the air between them.
Kian glanced at Virginia, then back at Archer, and suddenly said, "Mr. Vanderbilt, I sincerely hope you appreciate the person standing right in front of you. If you miss your chance again, you might just lose it for the rest of your life."
There was a brutal double meaning to his words:
First, no one was going to wait around for him forever.
Second, if he didn't treasure the woman he had, someone else happily would—someone exactly like Kian Shaw.
Without waiting to see if Archer had caught his drift, Kian nodded at Virginia. "I'll be going now. Call me if you need anything."
Watching Kian walk away, Archer's grip on her waist tightened almost painfully.
"Why didn't you tell me you were having lunch here?" he asked, looking down at her, his voice dripping with an acute jealousy he didn't even notice.
Virginia looked up. "It was just a work meeting. Weren't you supposed to be in a meeting at the Eastwood District?"
"It ended early," he grunted, guiding her toward the exit. "Let's go home."
