Virginia nodded and sat down. The table was full of dishes, almost every one of them something she used to eat when she lived with the Vanderbilts.
Mushroom chicken soup was bubbling in a clay pot, next to BBQ ribs, dry-fried green beans, steamed eggs, and a small plate of rice pudding she had casually mentioned once before.
A lump formed in her throat. She lowered her eyes, took a deep breath, and forced down the surge of emotion.
"Where is Edward?"
"Don't mind him. You know how he is, just like Archer. He's probably still in a meeting at this hour."
Virginia smiled, then frowned slightly. "Helena, isn't it too much of a waste for just the two of us to eat all this?"
"What waste? You're too thin, I still don't think it's enough." Saying that, Helena personally served her a bowl of soup and pushed it over. "Drink it while it's hot."
Virginia quickly took it with both hands, lowered her head, and took a sip.
The chicken soup was rich, the flavor of mushrooms spreading on her tongue. It was exactly as she remembered, unchanged.
Just as she was about to say something, familiar footsteps echoed from the doorway.
Virginia's movement paused, her pupils slightly constricting.
The next second, Archer appeared in the hall, wearing a dark gray double-breasted trench coat over a black turtleneck cashmere sweater.
He clearly hadn't expected to see Virginia here either. His steps faltered for a fraction of a second before returning to normal. He casually took off his coat, handed it to Mrs. Higgins, walked to the dining table, pulled out a chair, and sat down.
"Mom."
"Oh, what made you think of coming over today?" Helena raised an eyebrow, her tone lukewarm.
Before, when she asked him to come back, he always used work as an excuse. Today, he showed up uninvited.
Archer didn't reply. With a single look, Mrs. Higgins quickly brought him a set of silverware.
His movements were practiced as he used serving utensils to place a piece of sea bass on Helena's plate.
Virginia's expression remained unchanged, but her fingers tightened around her spoon. She lowered her eyes, continuing to drink her soup as if she hadn't seen him.
