Nick POV
I hold her until she finally steps out of my arms. I would have held her all night if I could have. Now that I’ve let myself truly open my heart, I worry that she won’t accept this, accept me. “I’m not sure what to say, Nick,” she says looking into my eyes. “You don’t have to say anything. I know what I just told you is a lot to take in. I don’t expect you to just accept me because I told you who I am, but I needed you to know.”
“It’s just so hard to believe, but I do believe, Nick. I also feel torn. I won’t ever forgive Trevor, but I’m
not even divorced and here I am thinking about starting a new relationship with a man that makes me feel things I shouldn’t be feeling in two days. Then there is the whole baby thing,” she says. I can’t stop the smile that spreads across my face. She is thinking about things with me.
“Nick, you’re smiling after I just said I was torn,” she says. “I’m smiling because number one you won’t be married forever. Number two, any baby you have I will love like it’s my own. I know that I won’t be biologically he or she’s father, but blood doesn’t make a family. I also know that you won’t keep Trevor from being involved, and I accept that too.” “Why are you so perfect? You could be all like I’m Santa Claus. I’m better than your ex,” she asks.
“I don’t think anyone has ever accused me of that before. We have established the words used to describe me are usually grumpy or abrasive. As for being Santa Claus, besides with kids, that doesn’t really win me any points.” “Bullsh*t, do you know how cool it would be to say I’m Santa Claus’s girlfriend,‘ she says with a giggle. My smile gets bigger if that’s possible. “Well, I’m glad to know that tips the scale in my favor.“”
“Why don’t we head back to the Inn before Chrissy sends out a search party for us? I’m sure you have lots of questions for her, and it will give you time to think.” She nods and steps toward me. I
on my cheek. “Thank you, Nick, for trusting me with stand still as she leans up and presses a kiss your secrets,” she says as she turns to head out of the sewing room. Not just my secrets Clarice but my heart.
Trevor POV
As soon as the call drops, I punch my steering wheel. Who the f**k was that on my wife’s phone?! dial her back immediately and got a message I never expected to get. She has blocked me completely. I dial my father. I know he is pissed, but what if she is in danger? “What could you possibly want after the conversation we just had,” he asks. F**k I really f**ked up with him. He sounds like he hates me. I never thought my father would be so cold to me.
“Dad, I know you’re angry, but I’m worried about Clarice.” “Oh, now you’re worried about your wife.

Maybe had you worried about her instead of f**king her friend, you wouldn’t be in this situation,” he +25 Points grits out. “I know I f**ked up dad, but I just called Clarice and a man answered her phone.” There is a long silence before he speaks again. “I will call and check on my daughter. Leave her alone. Trevor. You lost the right to worry about her,” he says and cuts the call.
I pull into the driveway and slam out of my car. I make my way down the path and slam the front door open. I have the urge to start breaking everything in my path, but I stop myself knowing Clarice decorated our home. My eyes catch the wedding picture that sits over our mantle. God, she is beautiful. What the f** was I thinking? After a few seconds of just staring at my wife, I make my way to my office. I grab an unopened bottle of whiskey off my wet bar. I pour myself two fingers.
I throw it back and pour myself another two fingers fighting tears that want to fall. I pull my shirt over my head as the heat of the liqueur starts to flow through my veins. I’ll probably end up sleeping on the couch here anyway. I can’t bring myself to sleep in our bed without her. I pour two more shots before I plop down in my chair. I don’t think my father will fire me if I don’t show up, but I’ve never seen him so angry. Fine, I’ll have to wait two more days, but then I’m going to Colorado on Saturday. I don’t care what my parents say.
I need to know who the f**k was on her phone. I was Clarice’s first and I swear if it kills me I will be her last. She is mine. I know she still loves me even if she is angry with me. I quickly change my flight to first thing Saturday morning before I throw back my last drink. I stand and make my way over to the couch. I strip off my sweats, leaving me in just my boxer briefs. The minute I lay down my eyelids feel heavy. I dream of my wife. We are back in our bed and I can once again see love in her eyes when she looks at me.
I moan as she moves down my body and takes my hard c**k into her warm mouth. “Oh baby, that feels so good. You s*ck me so good, Clarice.” Pain pulls me from sleep and my eyes fly open. “What the f**k Trevor” Loretta says. “What the f**k are you doing here? How the f**k did you get into my house and why the f**k are you touching me?” “You know Clarice gave me the key. I want to know why you called her name when it’s my mouth your f**king,” she says.
“Loretta get f**king dressed and get the f**k out. I told you this was done. I’m going to Colorado on Saturday and bringing my wife home.” “Why Saturday? I thought you were leaving tomorrow morning. That’s why I came over. I told you I’m coming with you,” she says. “Are you out of your f**king mind? Do not touch me again. We are done. You are not going anywhere near Colorado. Now get dressed and get the f**k out.”
Tears run down her cheeks, and she reaches for me, but I step back. “Trevor, you can’t do this to me. I love you,” she says. “No, I warned you that Clarice was number one. The minute she left, everything I felt for you left too. Now get up and get dressed. Don’t make me file a restraining

order against you, Loretta.” “How can you say that to me? You said you loved me. You said that we could be together with Clarice. Now you just want to throw me away,” she says.
“I’m not throwing you away. Do you understand I might lose my wife for what we did? I love her Loretta. I can’t live without her.” “That’s how I feel about both of you,” she says as she gets to her feet. “I’ve known her longer. Maybe if I go back and talk to her, I can convince her to talk to you. I want this to work, Trevor. Especially if she is having a baby. I want us all to be a family.” “I don’t know Loretta. What if seeing you makes it worse?” Why the hell am I even entertaining this?
“I promise you I won’t make it worse. In fact, I think seeing me in our hometown will bring back all the amazing memories we had together. She’s upset right now, but she loves us. Let me go and talk to her. I already have my flight set up for the morning. Just don’t shut me out anymore, Trevor.
If you
want nothing physical until she agrees, that’s fine. I’m fine with that, but don’t stop loving me,” she says. “Let’s just take it one step at a time. Definitely no more touching me until my wife agrees, but you have to promise, if she doesn’t, we go back to the way it was. That is the only
way
I’ll agree with you going, Loretta.”
“Fine, but I think she’ll agree once she isn’t so angry. I’ve already called my parents and told them I’m coming. Where are you planning on staying,” she says. I debate telling her but finally give in. “A Holiday Inn two towns over which reminds me I have to change my check–in day.” “Why don’t you just stay with me at my parents‘? I’m sure they won’t mind,” she says. “I don’t think that’s a good idea, Loretta. I’m sure they will wonder why I’m there with you without my wife.”
“I guess you’re right. I’ll text you as soon as I land. Answer my text and calls, Trevor,” she says. “Fine but don’t make me regret this, Loretta.” “I won’t. I want us to be a family, Trevor,” she says. I can see she wants to step toward me, but I’m grateful when she grabs her bag and heads out of my office. I pray I didn’t just make an even bigger mistake.
The rest of my night was no better. Every time I closed my eyes I was plagued by nightmares of finding my wife with whoever the f**k answered her phone. She kept telling me she didn’t love me anymore and she was divorcing me. I was never so grateful for my alarm to go off. Now I just have to face my father again, and I have no idea what to expect.
