Chapter 219: Overthinking

LOUIS’ POV

"What is this dinner about anyway, that my father is saying I must be there?" I asked. I have never been invited to anything by my family except for birthdays and important Carrington group events.

"I’m not sure of the exact details, sir, but your father would like to make a family announcement," he told me.

"How vague," I commented in annoyance. I wanted to avoid going, but as a family member who worked in their company, I couldn’t avoid it.

"And lastly, it has come to your father’s attention that you currently don’t have an assistant," he told.

"How does he know that?" I asked, surprised he knew. It had been only a week and a half since Jasmine had been unable to work.

" Your father has been watching you a little more closely these days," Roberts’ assistant told me.

A scoff escaped my mouth. " Oh, has he?" I replied. Why? I wondered for a moment before I remembered.

Seems the encounter with Jasmine was still on his mind, and he had told me he would watch me more closely following the slow and steady success of the garden house restaurant. I thought he just said those things in the moment since we happened to bump into each other.

"And rumors are circulating about Chairman Acland and his wife..." he trailed off.

My jaw tightened as I stared at the assistant.

In the socialite world, word was going around about how Keith and Diana’s relationship had fallen apart. That he had been deceived by her, and her son wasn’t Keith’s.

However, not everything was publicly known yet, like Jasmine’s conservatorship.

"I’ll take care of my assistant situation soon. Tell my father he doesn’t have to worry I said to him," I told the aide.

After a final exchange of goodbyes, he left my office, and I was left with my thoughts.

I wasn’t even thinking about replacing my assistant position.

For now, I had increased Ms. Deepak’s pay as she was filling in for Jasmine and doing her own role. However, from a business standpoint, if I didn’t resolve the issue soon, I would have no choice but to replace her. Suddenly, the uncertainty of the situation and how long it would last entered my mind.

I couldn’t replace Jasmine just yet—it had only been a week. I didn’t want to. I wanted to believe that I could find Tony, that Jasmine would return, but what if I didn’t? I still had no clue who Jasmine’s attacker and Tony’s kidnapper was.

What if it took weeks to find Tony? Or worse...
