Chapter 42: it’s okay to ask for help

"My name is Jasmine and I’m one of his coworker at the restaurant he works at, and you?" I asked her.

"I’m his little sister, Victoria," she told me. "Is there a reason you’re looking for him?"

"I just want to talk to him. Where is he right now?" I explained to her.

"He’s gone outside the building for a bit. But he’ll be back soon," she said to me. "I can text him."

"Please go ahead," I told her. She then took out her phone and texted him.

To be honest I didn’t know what I was going to say to Mike when I saw him. I was just concerned for him and wanted to see what I could find out.

"And who might you be you be?" She greeted my son with the widest grin.

"I’m Tony," he introduced himself with a shy smile. After a moment her phone pinged a notification sound.

She checked and said, "he’s coming."

I felt a little nervous he must be shocked to hear that I am here. But it’s fine.

"I didn’t know Mike had friends he’s never introduced them to me," Victoria then said.

So even Megan hadn’t met her? I asked myself.

"We’re co-workers I wouldn’t say that we’re close friends," I told her.

"I mean you must be if you’re coming here to see him," she said.

I nervously laughed. Little did Victoria know I’d bribed my way in here.

"What’s he like at work?" she asked me.

"He’s friendly but he also keeps his distance he doesn’t share much about himself," I told her.

"He’s like that with you too?" She asked me.

Us agreeing on this showed Mike was like this with everyone.

"Is that your father in the room?" I then asked her pointing to the room.

"Yeah," she responded in a sad tone.

"May I ask how his doing?" I then asked.

A sad expression appeared on her face.

"Sorry I didn’t mean to make you upset," I apologised to her

"No not at all. I don’t mind telling you. His kidneys are failing the dialysis treatments aren’t however we can’t afford it." She told me.

My heart sank in my chest at this news. This is even worse than I thought. Basically she was saying he was going to die.
