Gritting my teeth, I kept my head low as I rushed from the helicopter, hiding behind the guard houses. I waited for it to take off again before I peeked around the side, and my breath caught when I saw the place I’d grown up in.
The whole castle was covered by that haze that I now knew was magic, but something was wrong with this one. It was red. It shimmered in the sunlight and oozed over the castle like a wall of blood. It looked menacing. Vicious.
Like it would kill me if I stepped through it.
My wolf recoiled, hiding deep within me for the first time in a long time. What the hell was that? Was it what hurt Hunter? My blood ran cold as I felt for the bond. The pain had cut out while we were in mid-flight, and I’d almost gone out of my mind worrying that Hunter was dead. I hadn’t realised I was screaming until Nathan’s slap had snapped me out of it.
Only then did I feel the bond. It was faint, but still in place. Those threads were still rooted deep within me. But Hunter hadn’t responded, no matter how many times I reached out.
Now I was faced with how to enter the castle that had been my prison for so long. I was only familiar with the parts of it that I’d been allowed to walk through, accompanied, of course.
‘Hunter!’ I tried again.
When there was still no response, I pulled back to think of a plan. And backed right into a warm, solid wall.
I gasped loudly and covered my mouth, as if the loud helicopter hadn’t already announced my presence. Nathan’s arm circled my shoulder as he pulled me back further behind the wall.
“This has got to be the stupidest idea anyone has ever had,” Nathan said through his teeth.
“Why are you here?” I whispered. “I told you to go wait somewhere else.”
No matter what the outcome of this was, my family wouldn’t kill me. But I wasn’t so sure what they would do to Nathan.
“If I leave, how will you even go past that ward?” Nathan growled. “We’re already fucking surrounded right now.”
Even with my wolf hiding, I sensed the auras around us. Humans. Witches. Where was the pack?
“Then I would have let them capture me to take me inside,” I said, looking back where the helicopter was already a dot în the sky. “Call him back.”
“Too late, Princess,” Nathan said, his attention at a point behind me. He put a hand on my shoulder and chanted a few words. “I’ll find Hunter. Try not to die.”
Warmth spread through me, and all the aches caused by the earlier pain vanished. Every cell in my body felt revitalised. His magic. What had he done to me?
“What-”
Nathan raised a finger to his lips and slipped back further, gestung for me to go. He was right. They knew I was there, but they might not have sensed Nathan. Maybe he was how I turned hings around.
Taking a breath, I walked out from behind the old guard house, reading lightly even though I sensed them closing in around me. I’d stopped at the castle’s main entrance and looked up at the shimmering wall. My gut twisted Ice flowed through my veins at the magic that pressed into me as if it were live. This close, it looked like minute wisps of smoke

threaded together, radiating a force more powerful than anything I’d ever felt.
No, that wasn’t true. I’d felt something much stronger when that dark magic had come close to us.
The auras that had been tracking me finally appeared behind me

I turned to see Randall a few feet from me. Dressed in black robes, with his hands clasped in front of him, his whole body was covered in red. Something had changed in him since the last time we met at the cabin. Maybe since they’d turned into those horrifying shadows that had attacked the car. I didn’t feel bad about attacking him that night.
“Where’s Mr Rivers?” he asked.
The knots in my stomach loosened a little at the confirmation that they could not sense him. They couldn’t sense aura like wolves could, but their magic could have easily tracked him. How was Nathan hiding from them?
I didn’t answer him as I turned back to my old home. If the place was overrun by the coven, then where was my family? Were they in trouble, too?
“This doesn’t have to be any more difficult than it already has been,” Randall said. “We’re not enemies, Princess Katerina.”
“You could have fooled me,” I muttered, folding my arms. The longer we stood there, the more anxiety twisted through me. How strong was this magic that it could hurt a Lycan as strong as Hunter? Was my being there even going to help him?
Not that it mattered. I’d been compelled to come to him the second I knew he was in trouble.
The front doors opened, and Zachary walked out, dressed in the same robes as his son. bad horror movie.
“Please come in, Your Highness,” he said.
The fact that he was inviting me into my own home rubbed me the wrong way, but it was worse because they were expecting me to willingly walk into this trap.
But I had no choice.
I looked up at the sky and called to my wolf. Whatever this magi was, this wasn’t the time to hide. The sun would set soon; I didn’t even want to think about what problems the moon would bring for me that night.
Gritting my teeth, I stepped forward, each step feeling heavier as I approached the haze. I stopped just in front of it, with my heart pounding in my chest. I’d hidden from confrontation my whole life, but now I had to embrace it. I had to remember the lessons Mal taught me.
I raised a hand and reached for the haze in front of me.
“You can see it?”
My gaze snapped to Zachary’s. Their magic was strange and cold Evil. Was I not supposed to see it? I’d keep that close to my
chest, too.
“See what?” I asked.
The older man frowned and then shook his head as he stepped aside. And then I drew a breath and walked right into their trap, ignoring the ripple over my skin.
The first thing that hit me was the stench. Did magic even have scent? Then was this the smell of evil?
The second thing was Hunter’s scent. I inhaled, and it flowed in me, calling my wolf out of her hiding place.
