Kostas wore his full ceremonial outfit-the dark blue military uniform with the beta braid across the shoulder and medals on the front, with the billowing royal blue cape billowing behind him as he skipped the rest of the way down the stairs like an excited child.
And he was excited. I didn’t have to smell it to know it. His face lit up as if I’d just handed him the biggest gift.
And perhaps I had. I’d handed myself over even after they’d drugged me last time. But I was different. I wasn’t going to let them get away with this, even if I died fighting. Even if Hunter thought I shouldn’t have come to try to save him.
“Why are all these people here, brother?”
His jaw clenched. His excitement soured as he came to stop in front of me.
“I’m not your brother, Katerina,” he said. “By the end of the night, you’ll have to call me your mate.”
Hunter would kill him if he tried. My heart cracked when my mind conjured up the bloody images, replacing Elijah’s broken body with Kostas’s. No matter what was going on in Kostas’s head now, I didn’t want to be responsible for his death.
“I already told you I have one of those,” I said through my teeth. “You know what he will do to you if you try to force me again.”
Kostas threw his head back and laughed. It sounded unnatural, not at all like the easy laugh of the man I’d known throughout my childhood. My heart ached at what he had become.
When he pinned his eyes on me again, his amusement shone in them. By what was that red ring around his pupils, and the ooze shimmering over his body? Zachary had claimed he was from a powerful pack; maybe this was what his bloodline was capable of. ‘A beast who walked between worlds, long thought extinct.’ But how could anyone think someone bathed in that much darkness could be the saviour of the world?
“Didn’t you feel that pain?” Kostas asked. “That’s what a breaking bond feels like. That Lycan won’t be a problem anymore.”
I staggered back, and my wolf howled as I clutched my chest. It was an act, another trump card up my sleeve. My bond still hummed with life, Hunter’s disappointment still rolling through it.
“What did you do to him?”
“He’s dead,” Kostas said easily, slipping his hands into his pockets. “But don’t worry. Our bond will fix that hollow feeling in your chest. Now run along, Katerina. The ceremony will start at moonrise.”
Zachary and Randall appeared beside me and grabbed my arms. I’d always thought the covens were just humans capable of extraordinary things because of their spells, but their grips told me otherwise. I felt their strength. Felt their magic burning through my hoodie.
“This way, please, Your Highness,” Randall said.

Chapter 163
“Where’s Mother?” I asked before the Blackmores could pull me away.
“Oh, so now you’re concerned about her,” Kostas said.

There had been bigger worries after Mother fainted, like making sure I didn’t make a move that got them killed. But now, with the strangers filling her home and my brother acting so differently, I was more than concerned. I was terrified. The Alpha King and Queen were supposed to be the most formidable werewolves in our kingdom. But now the words in the prophecy rang through my head. Their land had died, the pack scattered, and their wealth slipped through their fingers.
“Is she alive?” I whispered.
“I’ll make sure she’s there to witness our beautiful ceremony,” Kostas said, before gesturing for the Blackmores to take me.
I could have tried to fight them off, but now that I was inside the coven’s trap, I had to figure it all out before the mess that would come with the moon. I inhaled deeply, catching Hunter’s scent again. As the father and son duo pulled me towards the stairs, familiar golden threads appeared, leading down the hall towards the servants’ quarters.
Several unfamiliar people stood along the walls. I wouldn’t get to Hunter that way. My wolf surged, ready to take them out and save my mate, as if she had forgotten about the magic that had made her retreat. Now wasn’t the time for any more hasty decisions. I didn’t know what that magic was capable of.
Once my wolf was caged again, I looked around as they led me towards my quarters. I sensed even more auras inside than I had when I’d searched from outside, as if this magic hid more than anyone was allowed to see. Could they all morph into those terrifying shadow creatures?
“What did you do to our bond?” I asked Zachary.
“It was never supposed to exist,” the older man said. “This was always going to be your path, Your Highness.”
“Who gave you the right to decide that for me?” I snarled. “After you helped me with Nathan, I actually thought your coven knew right from wrong. I should never have trusted you.”
“Why we helped Mr Rivers has no bearing on this,” Randall said. “Where is he, Your Highness? I find it hard to believe he let you come out alone.”
Did they need him for their twisted plan? This was the second time Randall had asked about him. Wherever he was, I hoped he’d get out before they caught him. No matter how powerful he was, he was still one person against a whole coven.
Randall opened the door to my quarters and stepped aside. Lined along the hall inside were several omegas with their heads bowed and hands clasped in front of them. Even among all this chaos, when everyone else had abandoned the pack, why had they stayed? Fear? Or because they were the easiest to bully?
At the front was the omega who’d told me to stop ‘throwing tantrums and behave’ the last time I’d been forced into a wedding dress. But she didn’t look cocky this time. Instead, her hands trembled as much as the other omegas. My quarters reeked of fear.
“There will be people posted here until the ceremony is prepared,” Zachary said.

“You’re keeping me prisoner in my own home?”
“A necessary precaution.”

Zachary turned, and a shiny pendant slipped from under his robes. Even without touching it, I knew it held great power. Something about it pulled me in, but repelled me at the same time.
“Please cooperate, Your Highness,” Randall said before he shoved me in.
The door closed behind me, and the lock turned. Seriously? They thought a locked door could hold me?
I turned back to the omegas, who still stood staring at the floor, but I could scent their relief in the air as Randall and Zachary moved away from the door.
