It was happening again. Both Kitty’s and Nathan’s focus was on something I couldn’t see, and Kitty’s fear ramped up to one hundred in seconds. I watched her freeze, watched her eyes dart around, and felt that crushing helplessness through our bond.

My chest began to burn again, as if whatever they could sense was calling me.

“Move,” Nathan hissed. “Back where we came.”

I didn’t wait for Kostas and his people to reach us. I grabbed Kitty and rushed back down the hall, my beast roaring inside me because it looked like I was running away.

I didn’t run from anything—I was the Lycan King. But Kitty’s terror gripped me like a vice, overwhelming everything else. What the hell was this? Was this still because of the moon’s pull?

I’d watched her move so gracefully, like a ballerina, every movement precise and not wasted, as she’d torn down body after body. I’d felt what she felt. It had been so fucking beautiful. I was their king, but that hadn’t mattered at all in those moments.

Then this. The terror sank into me so deeply that all I wanted to do was take Kitty somewhere safe so I could destroy it myself.

But why the fuck couldn’t I sense it?

I carried Kitty through the hidden panel we’d found and watched Nathan shut it behind us just before Kostas’s unnatural aura turned the corner. He placed his hand on the thick wood for a moment, then sagged against it.

My heart pumped loudly in my ears, almost as loud as Kitty’s, when Kostas stopped on the other side of us. That wasn’t my fear; I hated every second of it. But Kitty’s safety would always be my priority. Even if we were masked, there was no hiding the stench of blood that covered us. Kostas would find us if he just followed his

nose.

When Lordswood moved again, I almost let out a breath of relief. But it was too early for that. Kitty was still stiff in my arms, and Nathan’s gaze darted around the hidden corridor like something was hiding in the darkness.

Then Kitty relaxed. She let out a breath as her terror dulled and her trembling slowed.

“It’s gone,” Nathan whispered.

He whipped his jacket off and handed it to me. It took me a second to understand that it was meant for Kitty. When I wrapped it around her shoulder, Nathan’s scent tangled with Kitty’s sweet one again, and my beast

roared.

But I shoved him back. Borrowing Nathan’s clothes was better than allowing him to see her naked.

“What the hell was it?” I growled.

Nathan pressed his finger to his lips and began to move. I assumed he was heading back outside, avoiding the fight as he’d suggested. I’d follow him until he got Kitty out safely, and then I’d raze the whole castle to the ground.

But he turned down a different hallway and stopped. His eyes glowed briefly before the torches on the wall burst into flames. He didn’t chant. I hadn’t seen him chant in a while, not like the Blackmore coven.

“We’re safe here for now,” Nathan said.

“What is this place?” Kitty whispered, finally pulling away from me as she looked around.

There was a deep cove in the cold stone wall, complete with a single cot with a thin mattress, and an old, dusty wooden side table next to it.

“Most castles have hidden tunnels for security,” I said. “I’m guessing your father would have had guards down here during…”

I’d almost said during the war. But I didn’t want to remind Kitty why Lycans and werewolves were natural enemies. Not yet.

“We can’t stay here long. Kostas will figure it out,” Nathan said. “The exit is further down. We have to plan our next move in case we get separated.”

“We’re not getting separated,” I growled.

Kitty turned to me, her mouth opening as if she was about to contradict me, then she stilled. Her gaze snapped to my chest, to the rotting X and the black veins, and that terror returned all over again, while her worry flooded our bond.

“It touched you,” she whispered, slowly raising her trembling hand. She stopped just a hair’s breadth away from touching me. “It infected you.”

“I’m fine,” I said. I would be, once I killed Zachary Blackmore. Spells didn’t tend to last long once the caster was dead.

At least I hoped I was right about this one. Whatever magic we were going against, there was someone behind it. Someone the Blackmores had to know, because they were going through a lot of trouble to make sure they stopped them.

“You’re not fine,” Kitty snapped. “When it touched Nathan, he almost died. If it weren’t for the coven-”

She sucked in a breath, her eyes widening,

“This was their plan,” she whispered, staggering back. “They did this because they know we’d have to find them to save you. We’d have to go back.”

She rushed back to me and grasped my arms. Her fear switched back to anxiety as she studied the X on my

chest.

“We have to go back,” she stated.
