I’d sliced his wrist before he could finish his spell. The speed of it sent a jolt of awareness through me.

I’d done this before. The night I attacked Randall, I’d moved faster than my mind could keep up. Now this man howled in front of me with his hand hanging by his flesh. His spell had fizzled out, and now the magic around him dimmed.

But my vision stayed blood red.

Rage packed my chest until it felt like it would burst.

“Stay away from me!” the man screamed. “Help!”

The auras down the hallway were already moving. Their magic was already pressing into me from around the corner. But I didn’t care. They all had to die.

The man in front of me would be the first. I grabbed his throat, my claws slicing into his uselessly soft skin. His blood scented the air, and like the last time, my hunger roared through me. It gnawed at my stomach as my focus narrowed on the red trickling down his neck. His good hand clawed at my wrist, but I squeezed tighter.

He had to die. They all had to die so I could protect Hunter. So I could protect my family. My pack.

My mouth watered. I inhaled, lifting the man up to my nose easily, his feet leaving the floor as if he weighed nothing. I didn’t register when his struggling slowed. I didn’t notice when his hand fell away, and he went limp. My mouth opened on its own, and my teeth ached to tear into his flesh. To paint the walls red.

Movement at the end of the hall snapped my attention away. I flung the man aside with a snarl, and his body hit the wall and crumpled to the floor. Several men and women skidded to a stop, all of them coated in that red ooze.

Their eyes flicked between me and the mess I’d made.

“What the hell is she?” someone whispered.

I was already moving, stalking towards them, inhaling their scents with every step. Beneath the stench of their rotten magic, their fear called to me.

“I’m the retribution you invited with your own hands.”

I didn’t recognise my voice, but I recognised the hunger in it. My prey backed away, already chanting, slapping their hands on the walls while others carved seals and sigils into the air that meant nothing to me.

The air thickened with magic, and I sensed more of them approaching. They must have thought they were saved, because the scent of their relief mingled with the fear. But I was on them in seconds. One second, I was halfway down the hall; the next, two skulls knocked together with a wet crunch. Bodies dropped. They stopped chanting mid-spell.

Chapter 166

Then the screams.

Fuck.

The screams were almost more than I could handle. They sent a rush through me so powerful it was almost painful. I did it again and again. The screams, the broken bones, the blood spraying me and the walls. The tornado inside me fed and grew, spiralling higher with every sound.

The more they screamed, the more I wanted to hear it. They wanted to force me to mate with my brother? Then they had to catch me first. And even then, I would fight until my last breath. Until they understood that no one was taking Hunter away from me.

My vision was still red when the screams stopped. When the reinforcements came around the corner, their hands were already raised in attack. Spells launched at once. Lightning cracked against my side. Fire scorched the air. Something unseen burned my skin like acid the instant it touched me.

This time, my screams filled the hallway. Pain tore through me as my skin sizzled, the stench of burning flesh and hair mixing with blood. I staggered, but the fury didn’t let go of me.

And that thing inside me that demanded blood, it didn’t cower. Instead, exhilaration flooded deep in my bones. More prey. More blood.

In an instant, my wolf shattered whatever barrier had held her back. I launched into them as I fully shifted, jaws snapping around limbs, tearing and crushing easily. The symphony of screams began all over again. Wave after wave of people, coming right at me, offering their bodies willingly to my bloodlust.

When the last scream faded, I licked the blood off my snout and sat in the middle of the carnage. My tail wagged as adrenaline thundered through me. What was this feeling? Euphoria. I didn’t want it to end.

But the tornado slowed, and the red drained from my vision. Reality slammed back in, in full colour. So many bodies, so many lives claimed. And the image of Hunter’s beast, the day he tore Elijah apart, flashed in my head.

I had become just like him.

In the back of my mind, I knew this scene should have horrified me. Instead, I revelled in this extreme emotion, this horrific act I’d committed.

Sandalwood and orange blossom cut through the stench, and my head snapped up. The fury vanished completely, and in its place were the emotions Hunter always pulled from me. Love. Relief. Lust. Devotion so deep, I’d stopped trying to make sense of it.

When he appeared beside Nathan, my love blossomed, flooding the bond. He stood frozen, his eyes locked on me, shining with emotions he could never hide. Everything I felt for him echoed right back to me, and I melted. My wolf wagged her tail and stood, wanting nothing more than to be in his arms, to assure herself that he was real. That the coven and Kostas hadn’t succeeded.

It was as if that fury hadn’t existed. As if I wasn’t sitting in a pool of blood.

I shifted back so fast I was left gasping, and Hunter finally moved, catching me in his arms before I collapsed into the gore. His arms wrapped around my naked, blood-slicked body, crushing me into his chest.

Only then did I notice how our hearts hammered in perfect sync. How we both trembled, as if we were both crashing after that adrenaline surge.
