Chapter 199

My eyes felt like they had grit in them. My body felt like a giant open wound.

I groaned as I tried to turn, recognising I was lying on a soft surface instead of the unyielding dirt path. My eyes adjusted quickly, and I recognised the room around me. I was in Mal’s cabin, in the same bedroom I’d stayed in before.

Sunlight filtered through the windows. I had no idea if I’d been out for just a few hours or a few days.

I pulled the covers down, and cool air brushed over my overheated skin. I froze. Why the hell was I naked?

My eyes dropped to my body, and the shock hit me all over again. My skin was still blistered and bruised. I was healing, but not as fast as usual, even though my bones felt whole again. I knew why. My wolf had taken as much of a beating as I had, and the magic was still muted, almost as if it was hiding. I’d been so used to fighting it lately that the sudden quiet was mpossible to miss.

just how many barriers did Mal have around this place? I couldn’t even call it a barrier because I’d ridden straight into it. Was he trying to kill people?

My limbs were heavy when I pushed my feet onto the floor, and my head pounded like I had the worst hangover of my life. mages of Hunter in the same state when he visited last time flashed through my head. So that liar had gone through all this ust to be with me? Why the hell hadn’t he just waited for me to leave?

The shower spray stung my skin, but I smelled like burnt flesh, blood, and other things I didn’t want to think about. I washed carefully, biting back the pain before staggering back into the bedroom to air dry on the sheets.

Except the sheets weren’t the same ones. Someone had changed the bedding, and folded clothes rested neatly on top. A arge dressing gown and some underwear. The fabric was loose and soft enough that it didn’t rub painfully against my damaged skin.

An hour later, I felt steady enough to leave the room. The cabin was quiet, but my senses picked up the people around me. Mal’s strays. He’d probably collected more since the gym closed.

followed the sound of voices down the hallway and stopped in the kitchen doorway. Nathan was already looking at me, while Mal sat at the kitchen island with his back to me, speaking quietly.

For a second, the scene felt strangely familiar.

You need to get back to bed and recover,” Nathan said calmly. “I’ll bring you something to eat soon.”

Mal turned around. His eyes were blazing; I could smell his anger instantly.

Why the hell would you just show up without telling me?” he snapped, rushing towards me. “You have a phone.”

“I didn’t think I’d face my own mortality on your doorstep.” I said dryly. “And I left the phone.”

He grabbed my hand and pulled me towards the chair he’d just vacated.

“Not funny, Kathrine,” Mal said sharply. “I told you this place was safe for a reason. People can’t just come in uninvited. You could have died.”

Yet I’d done it. And Hunter had.

I looked at the old man’s flushed face. Beneath the anger was something I wouldn’t have noticed before my first shift. He was

scared.

“It’s okay, Mal,” I said quietly, squeezing his hand. “I’m fine.”

I was more than fine. I’d take this pain over fighting my emotions any day. Right now, everything felt muted. The rage, the grief. The empty space in my chest left by all of Hunter’s revelations. It was all just a dull ache.

“No, you’re not fine,” Mal said. “You should have come the second things became too much. What the hell is this about a psycho brother?”

I glanced at Nathan, who suddenly seemed very interested in his phone. How much had he told the old man? I didn’t want Mal involved, and I never wanted him worrying about me.

“She can take care of herself, you old bat,” Nathan said. “Lunch is burning.”

The scent of charred food filled the kitchen. Mal swore and hurried to the stove, and my gaze drifted back to Nathan. He and Mal had been sitting awfully close. Something about the way they interacted kept catching my attention.

When they’d dealt with each other at the gym, I’d sensed more irritation than anger from Mal. And now the familiarity between them felt deeper. Like packmates or family.

But that made no sense, because Nathan had already told me about his parents. They’d died the day his mother gave birth to Kostas. And Mal was human.

“Aren’t you two going to tell me how you know each other?”

Nathan smirked. “Jealous?”

“Suspicious.”

Mal dumped the smoking pan into the sink, muttering to himself. Lunch clearly wasn’t happening anytime soon. Not that I could have eaten, anyway. The fire from the barrier still burned faintly in my veins.

“I’m sure you’ve got enough to worry about right now,” Nathan said as he stood. “You need to shift to heal quicker. Let’s go

for a run.”

Did I want to heal? Or did I want to keep this fragile quiet inside my head a little longer?

I sighed and pushed myself to my feet. I was already in trouble; the sooner I healed, the better. If I lost control out here. national security would detect the spike. They’d come for me with everything they had. I’d have to be strong enough to run so Mal and his strays wouldn’t get caught in the middle.

The sun was still high when we stepped out onto the back porch.

“What happened?” he asked quietly. “You were supposed to come after work”

1 didn’t answer him, but my silence was enough. Nathan sighed and took my hand.

“We’ll run first,” he said, pulling me into the forest. “Then we’ll get this shit under control. Stay away from the boundary

He pulled his T-shirt and sweats off first without hesitation and shifted I’d never seen his wolf before. Black fur, just like Kostas. His golden eyes looked almost yellow as they locked onto mine

And then he bolted

I thought the pain would stop me shifting, and that my wolf would stay buried, but the moment I dropped the dressing gown and kicked the underwear aside, the anticipation of the run surged through my veins.

My wolf burst forward before I even called her, and our minds merged. I let go of the reins and inhaled deeply, drinking in the freedom of the forest.

Dirt crunched beneath my paws as my stride settled into rhythm. The mountain air filled my lungs, easing the pain with every step. Golden threads shimmered faintly ahead of me, leading me to Nathan. He wasn’t running fast, but when I caught up to him, I nearly stopped. I was bigger than him. Much bigger.

‘An abomination.”

I shook it off and breathed. Halfway through the run, I felt it. A familiar presence, somewhere beyond the boundary. It was Hunter again. He’d followed me. Irritation flickered through me, breaking the fragile peace I’d found.

I ignored him and surged ahead, racing along the bank, through the trees, up the mountain trails. It was almost as if Mal had bought the land just for this reason.

By the time I got back to the cabin, the sun was setting, and Nathan had already returned. He sat with Mal on the porch, talking quietly again. I didn’t step out of the woods until I’d pulled my dressing gown back on.

“You look better,” Nathan said, handing me a bottle of water.

He didn’t mention my size or the colour of my fur. Or the magic pulsing inside me again.

“Good thing, too,” Mal grunted. “Dinner’s in the kitchen. I’ll teach you how to control your magic tonight. Hurry up.”

I’d already stepped into the house before his words caught up with me. I stopped and slowly turned back to him.

Did Mal just say he’d teach me how to control my magic?
