Chapter 200
HUNTER
The Bureau was a disaster.
019
Kitty had let me fuck her, shut me out again, and then had gone down to meet another man for lunch like none of it meant anything. I’d still been trying to figure out what the hell that meant when the temperature in my office dropped.
I’d only known something was wrong when I saw my own breath in the air.
The windows behind my desk frosted over moments before a massive shadow slipped across the glass. It had sharp, rotting teeth and a twisted face meant to terrify anyone who looked at it.
Within seconds, the entire building was in chaos.
By the time Tanner and I reached the lower floors, the shadows were gone, and the temperature had returned to normal. but the lobby looked nothing like the controlled environment it usually was. Staff rushed across the floor, some clutching paperwork, others with their bags, conversations overlapping in hurried whispers as they tried to make sense of what they had seen.
The shadows had invaded every floor.
As I fought the instinct to inhale the fear saturating the building and shoved down the magic roaring through my body, answering Kitty’s call, one thing became painfully clear.
This situation was no longer contained.
The energy Kitty had released was impossible to hide. The only thing protecting her now was the fact that no one in the building, besides Tanner and his people, actually understood what they had witnessed.
My gaze drifted towards the high-security corridor on the other side of the lobby. Even the interrogation wing had been compromised. The reinforced doors had been left wide open, a massive security breach that should never have happened Red warning lights flashed above the entrance, while staff inside rushed to evacuate detainees and escort the injured towards the waiting ambulances outside.
Yet all I could think of was Kitty.

Was she alright? Had anyone realised she was the cause of this?
I’d followed her and stayed outside her apartment another night, half expecting the National Security to overviste my unders and attempt to detain her But Kitty had remained calm the whole night, and the bond between us had slayed frusir wingly

Before sunrise, I’d finally driven back to the Bureau
Now I sat behind my deck with reports paling in front of me incident statements Security touage: Medical reports. Most of it was speculation. The footage showed nothing useful. The shadows appeared un every doo sinuhannusly, leaving p trace of their origin
But fear always bred rumours
I skimmed through the latest report from National Security it had been signed by Bronson, the sintying wer walked around the Bureau as if he owned it..
Promoting him to executive level had seemed like a good idea at the time. If Lordswood wasn’t the Alpha King, Bronion

strong enough to take the position himself. Keeping Christos’ rival close had once felt like a strategic advantage.
Enemy of my enemy and all that shit.

A sharp knock sounded at my door. I didn’t bother looking up because I knew who it was. I’d been hyperaware of every movement in the building since I arrived.
“Someone’s been digging.”
I stilled. Tanner dropped a thin folder on my desk.
“This was included in some of the earlier reports from National Security.”
His tone alone told me I wouldn’t like what I was about to see. I opened the folder quietly.
Photographs stared back at me. Grainy images taken somewhere in the werewolf or Lycan kingdoms. Large paw prints pressed deep in the mud. A blurred frame of a massive wolf slipping between trees.
White fur.
My beast stirred instantly beneath my skin. The instinct to rush back to Kitty’s apartment and drag her out of the city nearly overwhelmed me.
They were digging before the magic spikes,’ I said in the mindlink.
Yes. And there’s no explanation about where these came from or why this file was included in the magic spike investigation.”
Was this just a coincidence? Or did someone here already know what Kitty was?
“I assure you, no one in our kingdom would betray the queen,” Tanner added, as if he knew what I was thinking.
I closed the folder and finally looked at him.
“Find out who made this report.”
And then I would deal with that person myself.
Tanner had barely left when Bronson’s scent reached my nose. My beast surged inunestiately. The way he’d looked at kuy hadn’t escaped me. Was this file his doing?
1 sipped it into my drawer just before the knock came.
“Come in”
The door opened before I finished speaking and the man entered with his head bowed in mosk respect
“Your Majesty,” he said “Have you looked at the report yet?
I gestured towards the pile on my desk

I cut him off with a look.
“The scale of the disturbance yesterday suggests that you should leave this office and allow me to do my job”
Bronson’s jaw tightened.
“You’re abusing your authority—”
“Then report me,” I growled, my beast rising instantly to the challenge. “This investigation still remains above your clearance. Leave.”

Bronson stiffened. And then he turned and walked out without another word. I tracked him all the way to the elevator, then down to his floor. His emotions remained tightly controlled, but his hatred for me was easy to taste in the air. It had grown worse since I returned.
I’d just leaned back in my chair when pain slammed into me so violently I nearly fell out of it.
Kitty.
She was in trouble.
By the time I got a car out of the basement and followed the bond out of the city, the pain was overwhelming. My hands tightened on the steering wheel as wave after wave of it crashed through me. She was wide open, unable to mask herself. I felt everything.
I knew where she was. Malcolm’s cabin. That pain was familiar, but why the hell was the barrier attacking her?
I raced all the way up the narrow road and skidded to a stop before the property line. The door slammed behind me as I jumped out, my eyes glued on the dirt path. It had been hours, so I wasn’t surprised Kitty wasn’t there. But a pool of blood soaked the earth, and it was all I could smell.
My beast surged. I stripped my clothes, ready to cross those barriers forged in hell again. My mate was hurt, I had to-
Rivers appeared out of the forest before I could shift.
“She’s fine. Already healing.” he said from the other side of the magic.
“Why the hell did this happen?” I hissed.
“She came unannounced Rivers said. “We were not prepared.”
“You could have fucking killed her, I snapped
“Oh, come on If you can cross it, Katerina can, too,” Rivers said.
That was true Every day I discovered something new about the boul between us 1 hadn’t even begun test how much ing strength had grown since st formed it was all because of her
“Let me in,” I said “I want to see her
“You shouldn’t be here.” River said, glancing towards the road behind me “You lead them straigh a he
Only then did I look back at the Bureau car. It was trackable. I’d made a rookie mistake

He was right. Malcolm’s cabin was almost impossible to find, and anyone who stumbled across it wouldn’t survive the protections guarding it. My beast calmed a little.
“You have fires burning in your house, Your Majesty,” Rivers said. “Put those out first before you burn everything down.”
I didn’t like that he was right. But he was. I glared at him before picking up my discarded clothes and climbing back into the car. But I didn’t drive back to the Bureau to put out the fires. I drove the car in the opposite direction and ditched it miles down another beaten trail.
Then I shifted and ran back.
Relief washed through me when I sensed her running through the forest, and then it faded when I realised she wasn’t even going to acknowledge me. So I waited. Hours passed while my beast paced restlessly beneath my skin.
Until finally someone approached the property line.
Malcolm.
He didn’t seem surprised to see me standing naked on the other side of his wards. As if the magic was reacting to him, the barriers shimmered faintly in the moonlight.
Interesting.
“You’ve got some nerve showing up here again,” he said.
“Invite me in.”
Silence. Then the old man smirked.
“No” he said.
My gaze drifted far beyond the trees, where Kitty’s presence pulsed faintly through the bond.
“That’s unfortunate,” I said.
“Is je
“Yes,” I said calmly “Because if you don’t, I might accidentally tell Katerina about all those interesting secrets you’ve been keeping from her
Then the smirk vanished from the old man’s face, and his eyes hardened
“Bastard’ he muttered as he turned away “Come in”
I inhaled and then stepped through. The barrier rippled over my aku, and this time, the magic barely reacted. When t reached the other sude. Malcolm was already gune
I looked towards the cabin again. It was tone Kitty and led a real conversation
