Training with the enemy.

If someone told me yesterday that I’d be standing in a clearing on Mal’s property, my magic barely contained, trying not to kill the Lycan King. I would have laughed in their face.
Now, there was nothing funny about it.
Rage sat heavy in my chest, nearly suffocating me, threatening to spill over every time my control slipped.
Hours had passed. Or maybe it had only felt like hours. Time had blurred into a cycle of control, failure, and barely holding everything together. Every time I slipped, the shadows reacted faster. Stronger. Like they were learning me or evolving. And every time, every single time, they reached for Hunter.
“Stop fighting it,” Nathan said for the millionth time.
“I’m not fighting it,” I snapped, even as my jaw locked tight.
“You are. You’re afraid of it.”
The shadows surged in response, slamming outward in a violent wave that cracked against the edge of the clearing. The temperature dropped instantly, and frost bit into the earth, spreading across the ground.
Nathan stepped back, but Mal didn’t move. Silence filled the night before Mal’s voice cut through it.
“Again.”
I didn’t bother arguing. It hadn’t done me any good before. Sweat clung to my skin, my muscles already burning from the run and whatever the hell Mal called a ‘warm-up.’ My focus dropped to the shadows pooling at my feet, writhing like they had a mind of their own.
No, not their own. Mine.
‘Pull them in,” Nathan said.
I clenched my jaw and forced a frustrated breath through my nose before I glared in his direction. But that was my mistake. because my eyes caught the dark shadow leaning against a tree trunk, unmoving, watching silently. Like a predator that didn’t need to chase because it already knew its prey couldn’t escape.
My pulse kicked, and the shadows lunged again. The fragile control I’d clawed together over the past few hours shattered instantly, and every thread of magic inside me became hyperaware of him Of where he stood Of how close he was
Of what he felt.
“Pull them back, Katerina,” Mal said, his voice sharper.
He’d used that tone on me before when I first started training. But that was when I’d been a wolfless teenager. It was not the same now, when I had a wolf that had no regard for authority. She pushed forward now, her presence fighting through the magic, and glared at Mal.
Mal and Nathan both stepped back. There was no fear in the air, but I tasted their wariness
I raged the wolf and shoved down that awareness flowing in the threads so hard my head throbbed. The shadows hesitated.

then slowly began to retreat, dragging themselves back towards me like reluctant beasts.
“You’re not trying.” Nathan said.
“I am.”

My voice came out sharp, edged with more than just exhaustion. I was dangerously close to losing it. The shadows flickered in response, licking up the trees before snapping back, like they were mocking me. It was clear I was not in control of anything.
“Focus,” Nathan said, stepping closer. “You’re reacting, not controlling.”
“It’s easy for you to say.”
“You’re suppressing it,” Mal cut in. “Loosen your grip. Let it move, but guide it.”
I stilled. Mal spoke like someone who had experience with magic. But the exhaustion hit me again. My irritation flared because it was already the middle of the night, and the pressure was mounting. I understood their urgency after Hunter declared someone already knew about me, but they were being unreasonable. I wasn’t going to master this in one night.
“No,” I said.
‘Katerina,” Nathan said, finally stepping into the clearing. “You don’t have much time. You-”
“I said no.” I hissed.
My shadows flared sharply. But from the trees, larger shadows answered, lunging forward and slamming to a stop just short of Nathan. They snarled, teeth bared, froth forming at their mouths, and denser than my shadows.
And their red eyes glowed in the dark. Like Hunter’s.
finally turned to him, the rage I was trying to suppress spilling over. My resentment grew. Of course he could control his. Whether the magic had infected him in my father’s dungeon or after Kostas almost killed him, I wasn’t sure. But what I did snow was that he wasn’t releasing his power with every little spike of his emotions.
‘She’s tired,” Hunter said calmly. “We’re done for tonight.”
Something in me snapped. I stormed across the clearing, ignoring the shadows in my path, until I stood right in front of
hirn.
You don’t get to speak for me,” I said coldly. “Leave.”
‘Kitty,” he started.
‘Don’t.” The word cut sharply between us.
But Hunter stepped closer anyway, his voice lowering “Let’s get through this first. The thing with our families was unavoidable. Your father-
“Unavoidable?” I echoed, the word breaking apart in my chest. “I have no grandparents, no aunts and uncles, na cuusins. And you say this was unavoidable?”
My throat tightened, the weight of his words choking me. I turned before he could see it, forcing the mask back into place
“I’m going to bed,” I stated.

They didn’t stop me. By the time I reached the cabin, the quiet pressed around me, broken only by the faint sound of Mal’s strays sleeping.
Suppressing the magic? Shutting down was the only reason I wasn’t dead.
Behind me. I felt him. That steady, infuriating calm, as if he was ‘being patient’ and waiting for me to stop throwing antrums. As if he knew that, even with this fury burning in my blood, I would still reach for him as I had in his office.
But it was Mal who caught up to me first.
‘You’re wasting energy arguing and fighting this,” he said evenly. “You’re about to burn yourself out before we even begin.”
Before we began? Then what the hell had we been doing all night?
Training starts early,” he added. “And it won’t stop just because you’re uncomfortable.”
Uncomfortable. Right. Because this-this slow unravelling, this loss of control, this bond that constantly tormented me- was just discomfort.
didn’t bother responding; I just walked inside, my fists clenching and unclenching at my sides. Why was I even putting myself through this when I was just a rejection away from death?
I was too exhausted to shower. I collapsed onto the bed without bothering to change. My whole body ached, and I felt hollowed out from the inside. Despite the rage still simmering in my chest, sleep dragged me under anyway.
I woke up to hands on my shoulders, shaking me.
‘Kitty. Wake up.”
My eyes snapped open. The room was dark, so dark that it only took a moment to realise this wasn’t the normal kind. It was thick and swirling like smoke. Alive. The room was drowning in it.
Shadows coated the walls, the ceiling, the floor. They were writhing, twisting, stretching into grotesque shapes that scraped against the edges of the room like they were trying to get out.
My breath hitched.
“What-”
“You’re losing control.” Hunter’s voice cut through the darkness, and I realised they were his hands on my shoulders His body near mine.
Panic spiked, and the shadows exploded outward, slamming into walls, crawling over furniture, reaching past the room into the rest of the cabin. The structure shook under its force.
And then the screams started. Mal’s strays.
I jolted upright, knocking Hunter’s hands away The metallic scent of blood already filled the air.
“Control it,” Hunter said.
“I can’t!”
The admission tore out of me as panic clawed at my throat. I shouldn’t have gone anywhere near Mal and his cabin tl been reckless and had been thinking only of myself. Now people were dying.

The shadows lashed harder, and Hunter gripped my shoulders.
Look at me.”
I can’t-”

The moment our eyes locked, the bond flared wide open. No walls or barriers. Emotions flooded in with nothing to stop hem, nothing to protect me. His emotions, my emotions, everything tangling together until I couldn’t tell the difference.
ear. Anger. Guilt.
And something steadier.
Breathe,” he said, quieter now.
The Bureau will come,” I said, my voice breaking. “I’m going to get them killed.”
f my shadows hadn’t killed them already.
They won’t come,” Hunter said. “I’m here.”
Was it that simple? My control slipped again, and the shadows hit harder.
This is your fault. All of this-”
I know.”
He didn’t deny it. He didn’t make any excuses or try to soften it. He pulled me against him, and the contact sent shockwaves hrough me. It cut through the cold and chaos.
Breathe,” he murmured.
did, slowly dragging unsteady breaths into my lungs. I just wanted this nightmare to stop. The bond flared, and the hadows froze. Every single one of them, suspended mid-air as if I’d commanded it.
But I hadn’t. My focus had turned to his body against mine. Like in his office, my world narrowed to him, and the chaos nside me quietened.
My chest rose and fell rapidly. His heart hammered as loudly as mine, and when it began to steady, I felt the shift, and fear liced through me.
Dur heartbeats were in sync again.
