Chapter 201

The carport leaned beside the cabin, its steel posts choked with twisted vines that crept upwards and spread across the corrugated roof, swallowing the structure piece by piece. Gym equipment filled almost every inch of the concrete floor.
Sweat dripped from my forehead, my arms numb from swinging at the punching bag. Apparently, running for hours hadn’t been enough; Mal intended to make sure I was bone tired before he taught me anything useful.
My senses pricked.
The moment Hunter crossed over the wards, I felt it. The bond between us flared like someone had shoved a blade through my chest.
1 froze in the middle of the outdoor gym, my pulse kicking up as the sensation crawled through every nerve in my body. For hours, I’d managed to ignore him out there, pacing just beyond Malcom’s property like a restless predator.
Now he was inside.
My shadows reacted instantly. They stirred across the ground at my feet, coiling around the steel poles before stretching towards the trees as if they could already feel him moving through the forest.
Damn it.
Nathan grabbed my arm before I could move.
“Control it,” he said sharply.
His version of control involved me letting my guard down, opening myself up so I could feel and tame my bonds. But that meant I couldn’t hide anything from Hunter-he’d feel every shameful emotion I was trying to bury. The bond pulsed as those unwanted feelings pushed to the surface.
“I am,” I said through my teeth.
“You’re not.”
His grip tightened as the shadows spread farther across the dirt, dark tendrils sliding towards the edge of the clearing.
“Katerina.”
I forced myself to breathe slowly. In. Out.
The shadows began to pull back, retreating towards my feet like angry snakes. But that was only because I’d slammed down hard on the connection with Hunter.
Still, his presence pulsed through the bond like a second heartbeat
Nathan studied me for another second before letting go.
“Where’s Mal? He said he was teaching me.”
I wouldn’t master anything before Hunter reached me, but it was worth a try. The last time Nathan asked me to let go, my shadows had nearly engulfed the gym and attacked Hunter. And his own shadows had risen to meet mine, almost like a challenge.

If I hadn’t shut him out this time, I didn’t even want to imagine what would have happened. National Security would be on our doorstep within hours. I’d have to go on the run before I was ready.
“He’ll tell you the same thing I said,” Nathan said. “You have to let that grip on your emotions go. You need every part of you working together like a well-oiled machine. You can’t do that if your mind is still conflicted.”
“My mind isn’t conflicted about anything.”
My mind was perfectly clear on how much I hated Hunter and what he’d done to me. It was my stupid heart that betrayed me, and the bond that condemned me.
Mal appeared at the edge of the clearing, his hands clasped behind him as he walked calmly towards us, as if his wards hadn’t been breached. But I couldn’t expect Mal to understand how dangerous the Lycan King was. No matter how close he was to Nathan, he was human. He hadn’t lived in our kingdom.
I rushed out of the carport to meet him.
“Hunter is here. The barrier didn’t hold him long.”
I frowned as the words I’d just said played back in my head. The barrier hadn’t held him, but why wasn’t he hurt? I’d been down for hours.
“I invited him in,” Mal said, walking towards an old couch against the cabin wall.
“What?”
“He’s causing your power spikes,” he said. “You don’t have time to train gently anymore. Having him here is the only way.”
I staggered back. For a second, I felt betrayed. But Mal had no idea just how fragile my control really was. How much of this was barely being held together by force. How the pain would consume me if I left myself open long enough.
“He’s the Lycan King, Mal,” I explained. “He could destroy this place without blinking.”
“I’m aware.”
He knew much more than he’d ever let on. That much I was sure of now.
Mal settled back and crossed his legs like this was just another gym session. I studied him, my mind struggling to understand what he was saying.
“I hear you’re his assistant now,” Mal continued.
I glared at Nathan. I hadn’t told Mal that, I hadn’t even told Nathan. But the rogue always had his finger on the pulse.
“If you’re going to stay that close to him, you need to get this under control, Katerina,” he continued “I’m doing this for your own good.”
It was the first time since the beginning that he’d used my real name.
A twig snapped behind me. I knew it was deliberate because Hunter could have walked up to us without any of us realising When I turned, he was already standing at the edge of the clearing, his body half-shadowed by the trees
Or were those his shadows?
For the second time that night, dark tendrils coiled around me before lunging forward, their teeth snapping in Hunter’s direction. And then they stopped. Just like the night in the gym, they didn’t attack him

My eyes met his. He didn’t move closer and didn’t speak right away. But the bond cracked something open in my chest. I hated that I still reacted to him like this. Hated that my body remembered everything I was working so hard to forget.
‘We need to talk, Kitty,” Hunter said.
His voice carried across the clearing. I stepped back instinctively because I already knew if I let this turn into a conversation, I wouldn’t stay that way. Not with the way the bond was pulling at me.
Please, Katerina,” he added, quieter now. “If we don’t fix this, even I won’t be able to protect you.”
didn’t want his protection. I didn’t want him to feel like he had to protect me. I didn’t want this stupid bond making his lecisions for him.
They already know what you are.”
staggered back.
Someone knew I was a white wolf? Or that I was a monster with dark magic growing inside me?
