Even before I stepped inside the Bureau, I could feel the tension. The guards outside the entrance straightened, but they didn’t speak as I went past.

The lockdown had stripped the building of its usual noise. There was no chatter, no movement, and the few eyes in the lobby were all watching me. I crossed the lobby slowly, stretching my senses. Wolves, Lycans, humans, vampires, and a few scents I didn’t recognise, which meant the outsiders had already been cleared through my strict security protocols.

Interesting.

The conference room where they waited was above most people’s security clearance. I caught the executive elevator to the conference floor and stepped out. The hallways stank faintly of magic. Without the settled bond, I probably wouldn’t have picked it up. My vision sharpened, and my beast pushed forward already on high alert. He’d been pissy since Kitty kicked us out again earlier.

There was no trace of the magic on the walls or in the air, so it was on someone in the conference room.

The conference room doors were already open, and Tanner stood beside them. I already knew he had eyes and ears in the room. He bowed and waited for me to walk through before he came in behind me. The unwelcome visitors sat around the long table in groups, spaced apart like they didn’t trust each other. I made a mental note of that.

Council representatives. I looked around the table as I walked to the head of it. Humans. Pack leaders, both werewolf and Lycan. High priests and priestesses. Independent alphas who rarely left their territories. The leaders who represented the ‘others’. And three people I’d never seen before. They sat with Bronson and a few werewolf alphas, forming a more formidable group.

“Your Majesty,” one of the werewolf alphas said.

He looked familiar, with scars on his face and his arrogance coating him like a second skin. And he smelled faintly of magic.

I didn’t return the courtesy as I settled in my seat. If they had a problem with it, they could say it out loud. No one did.

Tanner sat on my right side, and a few eyes widened. It was a clear indication of his role in my kingdom and the Bureau.

“Let’s skip the formalities,” I said. “You didn’t call this meeting to waste time.”

A human cleared his throat. He was older, with silver hair, and his frame was frail. He was one of the Bureau’s political handlers for the human side of things.

“We’re here to discuss the increased activity in the city,” he said,

I’d bet he didn’t even know the real reason this sham of a meeting had been called.

“Tell me about it,” I said, leaning back.

“We had reports of increased supernatural energy. And alarming sightings, like shadows attacking humans in the streets.”

What bullshit was this?

“Any witnesses?” I asked. “Any actual medical reports?”

“Well…”

The human glanced in Bronson’s direction.

“No,” he answered after a while.

“Since no one bothered to tell you the real reason you’re here,” I said, folding my arms, “I’ll be kind and explain it to you. You’re about to declare a rebellion.”

The room stilled. They hadn’t expected me to say it so blatantly. A few of the representatives were genuinely surprised, but others had known it was coming all along. I singled out those groups. Like the scared alpha, they smelled faintly of magic.

“It’s not a rebellion if people just demand the truth,” Bronson said, finally speaking out.

His face was drawn and pale. I smirked slightly and turned my attention to him.

“Have you been sleeping well, Bronson?”

He tensed. Anger bloomed around him before he masked it. Hundred bucks said he hadn’t told anyone what I’d done to him. It was why the other had so brazenly walked into my lair.

“I’ve been sleeping well. Thank you for your concern, Your Majesty,” he said. “But reports have been made of missing heirs right after another spike of energy. Alpha Carter made the repor just this morning.”

I looked at the alpha with the scar. No wonder he looked familiar

“I’m sure a simple report in the right department could have fixed that. Our communications are locked down, but we’re still very much doing the work we were trained to do. There was no need to call a Council meeting for that.”

Bronson bristled.

“His brother witnessed the abduction,” he said. “And due to the identity of the person, we came straight to you.”

“Ah, I see,” I said.

And when I didn’t rush to say anything else, Alpha Carter slammed his hand on the table.

“My son is in line for my title, and that princess took him. I demand that he be released, and Katerina Lordswood answer for her crime.”

So they hadn’t seen her shift. That was something, at least. I ignored the disrespectful outburst and leaned forward, resting my elbows on the table.

“If you would like to report a kidnapping, you’re still free to use the correct channel just like everyone else. I still fail to see how this meeting will serve you. I believe when the princess herself was missing, Prince Kostas filled the paperwork downstairs.”

“She is the cause of the power spikes,” Bronson snarled. “She use those shadows so openly at the banquet, and then all of a sudden, those things are plaguing the city.”

“You mean these things?”

The shadows rose suddenly behind me. I felt their hot breath on the back of my head, and the low rumbles from their chests filled the room. Terror exploded around me, except for the Lycans, who sat perfectly calm. I inhaled, taking only small amount, I didn’t trust myself with more after last night.

I pulled the shadows back and leaned back in my chair. The Council representatives remained frozen. I only felt bad f humans, who had absolutely no idea what game was being playe right under their noses.

“The source of the spikes has been found,” I said. “It’s under control now. As for your son-”

I turned to Alpha Carter,

“Make the report in the relevant department. I believe Mr Bronson can point you in the right direction.”

“Your Majesty-” Bronson started.

“Is there anything else?”

When no one raised any objections, I stood and straightened the cuffs of my shirt.

“Let’s not waste each other’s time again,” I said, looking directly the ones I’d already singled out as the traitors. “If you want to start a rebellion, this isn’t the place to do it. Anyone who takes the law into their own hands will be dealt with accordingly.”

That was my only warning.

“Meeting dismissed,” I said.

I glanced at Tanner before walking out. The real job was only just starting. Figuring out which traitors were there because of misinformation, and which ones had come because of pure greed. My mind was already shifting to the next step.

Justin.

That kid was healing slowly, but he was well enough to talk. He’d confirm who all the players were and what the endgame was before I made my move.

The bond shifted faintly in the back of my mind. I already figured out that Nathan was taking Kitty somewhere safe, but did that bastard rogue realise that it was the others that needed protecting from her?

A soft knock sounded on my door before I’d settled down behind my desk. The scent filtered into the room, and a frown formed on my face. I’d been too busy thinking about the moves had to make that I hadn’t realised I had company.

“Come in.”

The door opened slowly, and April stepped into my office. Her clothes were ripped, her hair was a mess, and terror hung over her like a cloud.

“I apologise, Your Majesty,” she said. “I didn’t know where else to go.”

Her scent hit me a second later. Blood, wolf, and something else. Pack aggression. Someone hadn’t just attacked her. They’d

hunted her.
