Chapter 219

The house wasn’t what I expected.

Nathan had a taste for excess and all things shiny. Marble floors, sprawling grounds, security layered so thick it hummed in my senses. Except for that cabin where he hid me when I went into heat, every other place he’d stashed me before had looked like it belonged in a magazine.
This one didn’t. It sat tucked behind a line of trees somewhere in Thornhill, the city Nathan ruled with his vast business interests. It had taken a few hours to drive there, but only because he’d taken the scenic route to ditch the eyes on us.
The structure was low and dark, more like a caretaker’s lodge than one of his properties. There were no sweeping driveways, expensive pillars, or sculptures. And there were no gates or obvious cameras. Yet the moment I stepped out of the car, I felt the magic crawling across my skin like static. It was thick and layered in overlapping wards. And it was old magic. It wasn’t flashy or decorative; just functional and defensive. Designed to hide.
I tilted my head, studying the air. With my sharper vision, I saw the magic covering us like golden dust.
“Subtle,” I murmured.
Nathan shut the door and walked around to me. “That’s the point.”
I walked towards the house slowly, letting my senses stretch. The wards didn’t push me back. They parted, recognising him, and maybe by extension, me.
The door wasn’t even locked when Nathan pushed it open. Inside, it was even more stripped down. Wood floors, minimal furniture, no famous artwork on the walls, and no personal touches. Just a comfortable, oversized couch, a fireplace, a small table, and a kitchen that looked rarely used.
Nathan dropped my bag near the couch while I moved to the window. The forest beyond the glass felt empty, unlike the forest in the boundary that had housed creatures I did not even know. This forest felt like all the animals avoided it.
It was safe and boring. A perfect place to lie low.
“I like it,” I said.
He glanced at me, clearly surprised.
“It’s hidden and quiet,” I added. “Reminds me of Mal’s place.”
I sank into the couch and stretched my legs out. The forest out there seemed big enough for me to shift and run if my wolf became a little antsy. Maybe I could even practise my hunting skills.
The excitement still lingered under my skin, constantly feeding something inside me,
They were hunting me,
The thought made me smile again.
“If you keep smiling like that, I’m going to check you into an asylum,” Nathan said as he walked into the kitchen, “Anyone would think I just gave you expensive jewellery instead of informing you that a whole kingdom wants you dead.”
It had been hard to keep myself in check on the drive out of my city, but Nathan had stopped asking why. I assumed he thought it was because of that big mark on my neck. I’d mostly nored that humming in the bond, but it had flared a few times since Hunter left my apartment.

Nathan placed a bottle of water on the table and walked back to the kitchen.

“It’s small but fully stocked, and there are some homemade meals that you can just heat up,” he said. “I’ll prepare some for you to eat now and then get out of your hair. There’s a bedroom and bathroom in the back.”
“You’re not staying?”
He tensed and looked back at me.
“Safer not to,” he said.
Irritation bubbled up inside me. Even when Hunter wasn’t there he was still dictating my life. But maybe it was for the best if Nathan stayed somewhere else. I didn’t intend to stay locked up the whole time I was there.
Nathan’s phone rang just as he placed a steaming plate of meatloaf and vegetables in front of me. The sound cut through the stillness. When he checked his screen, his expression tightened instantly.
“Your Majesty,” he said as he answered.
I didn’t have to strain to hear what Hunter said. Just a simple sentence.
“April’s here.”
Nathan tensed. His gaze flicked to me, and for a second, panic flashed in his eyes. Then it was gone, replaced by the cool facade he wore so well.
“I’ll call you when I get there,” he said.
When he slipped his phone back into his pocket, he turned to me.
“I’m stepping out. It’s safe here, but don’t leave my wards,” he said, and then he left without another word.
The house fell silent again as I ate the food Nathan had prepared It was a good thing he’d done that, because there was nothing for miles around us, and nowhere to order takeout. I leaned back when I’d nearly licked the plate clean and closed my eyes. The wards hummed comfortingly around me while I let my mind drift, completely detached and unconcerned about the reason Nathan had gone out. Whatever was happening outside didn’t matter.
What mattered was that they were coming for me.
And I welcomed it.
Time blurred. I nodded off with images of last night’s hunt playing on my mind while I anticipated the next one. Maybe it would be the other Carter boy, or Harris Bronson.
A car stopped outside, I didn’t move at first, content to savour my dream a little longer. Then the scent hit me first before the sound of footsteps.
Blood. Bruised skin, Fear.
My eyes snapped open as I looked towards the door, Nathan stepped inside, tension radiating from him, and April f
behind.
She looked terrible. Her lips were split, not healing, even though she was a wolf. One eye was bruised, and her clothe torn. She held herself stiffly as if every movement hurt. I caught he subtle scent of wolfsbane on her.
I sat up slowly, Nathan guided her to the couch, and she lowered gingerly next to me.
“She’ll stay here,” he said gruffly,

And then he turned to leave without an explanation. The door softly closed behind him, and then his car started and drove away. I looked back at the girl I’d once believed to be a traitor, my eyes wide. Why would Nathan just dump me with April after everything that happened?
But my indignation died when I turned to her and her injuries caught my eye again.
“Who did it?” I asked.
She shook her head. “No one.”
My jaw tightened. From our first conversation, I remembered she came from a pack that treated omegas fairly, so I couldn’t understand why anyone would have done that to her.
“Want me to find them?”
She shook her head, her eyes widening with alarm.
“Oh, no, Your Highness,” she said. “I couldn’t possibly ask you to get involved with this. I don’t want anyone else hurt because of me.”
Well, I had a newsflash for her. Whoever did it was probably going to be dead by the end of the night. Nathan hadn’t gone outside to play. I’d stay out of it.
“I can teach you some self-defence, if you’re interested,” I said. ” helped me when I was still on suppressants.”
April looked up as if she was surprised.
“You want to help me?” she asked.
Not particularly. But I had time to kill until I found my next hunt.
“You need to get stronger,” I said. “Train with me. Learn to fight Back. Don’t cower simply because you’re an omega. We’re wolves, too.”
She blinked at me, and then her gaze dropped.
“I’m not like you.”
“No,” I agreed. “But you don’t have to be. You just have to make them regret touching you. There are a million ways to kill someone bigger and stronger than you.”
She stared at me like she didn’t know whether to be horrified or reassured.
“Or you can just disable them,” I offered.
“Can I really do that?”
The magic pulsed faintly, Something shifted. I frowned slightly I spread my senses just outside Nathan’s boundary.
“What is it?” April asked.
The magic around us had changed. Whoever that was was pressing against it, just testing, feeling for weaknesses. I knew they wouldn’t find any. They’d probably followed Nathan back. He hadn’t exactly been in his right mind when he dropped April
off.
My lips curved slowly.
“They’ve found us,” I said.

April’s face paled, but my smile widened.
“Don’t worry,” I said. “This will be your first lesson. Follow me.”

Somewhere in the forest beyond the house, a wolf howled. A call to his pack. And then several wolves answered that call.
The sound vibrated through my chest, and something inside me leaned towards it.
Finally.
My smile stretched all the way across my face as I pushed the door open and stepped into the trees.
