Justin lay strapped to the chair now, no longer on the cot. The medic had cleaned him up enough that the wounds didn’t look fatal, but he still smelled like soured blood and decay. His eyes were open but unfocused, and his pupils were blown wide from the sedatives.

He twitched when I stepped closer. Fear and pain flashed across his glassy eyes. The kid hadn’t seen me last night, but he recognised the predator within me. I hadn’t bothered to mask it before I entered the room.

“Leave us,” I said.

Tanner nodded without hesitation and stepped out, sealing the reinforced door behind him. The wards hummed softly into place before they quietened. No magic in and out, and no sound either.

Just me and the boy.

Justin swallowed, and the sound echoed in the small room.

“I-I told him everything,” he said, his voice shaky and raspy. His vocal cords would never work right again.

But it was true. Almost. The boy was so shit scared he’d sang before Tanner could even touch him.

“You haven’t told us everything yet,” I said calmly, pulling a chair across from him. “You just woke up.”

His eyes darted around the room as if searching for an escape. Sweat gathered at his temple. I knew from experience what the dark magic infecting him was doing to his organs. I didn’t have long to pull this off.

“They said you’d kill me,” he whispered.

“They?” I leaned back and crossed my legs. My beast was on high alert, watching the boy’s slightest movements, scenting the air for his reactions. I was the best lie-detector for miles around. Start there.”

He licked his cracked lips. The water jug next to his cot had remained empty for a reason.

“Alpha Harris Bronson,” he answered. “Not directly; it was one of his people. They said the Lycan King was compromised. That you were hiding that omega. That she’s dangerous.”

My beast stirred at the mention of Kitty.

“She made

her?”

you submit in front of all the alphas in the werewolf kingdom,” I said. “And you what? Just volunteered to attack

“No!” He shook his head frantically, and winced when the moverment pulled at his bandaged shoulder and neck. “We were told to just watch, We had protection. But then she came out. And she-”

He stopped. His breathing quickened, Terror saturated the room tasting so sweet on my tongue that I could understand why Kitty had craved it,

“She what?” I asked,

“She smiled,” he whispered, his eyes unfocused again, as if he was reliving that night.

The word hung between us. My grip tightened on the chair arm This kid definitely wouldn’t see the light of day again, not if he intended to turn my mate into a myth they could weaponise

“She smiled, and you decided to kill her”

“I panicked,” he said quickly. “I thought that was proof that she’s unstable. That she’s not… normal.”

The bond flickered again, and a ripple of excitement that wasn’t mine pulsed inside me. And that anticipation that had been simmering in her all day followed a moment later.

I sighed and mindlinked Tanner.

‘She’s about to do something. Tell Rivers.

‘Yes, Your Majesty.

He didn’t ask me who. I’d pushed Kitty so far that my own Beta recognised that I’d unleashed something far more dangerous than a monster.

‘And send a team to clean up,’ I added, before focusing on my prisoner again.

“Who else was involved?” I asked the kid.

He hesitated, and I picked up the flash in his eyes before he shook his head.

“No one.”

I leaned forward slowly. The boy still didn’t understand the mistake he was making.

“You’re alive because she didn’t finish you. That doesn’t mean I won’t,” I said. “And I can command the truth out of you any time I want.”

But a confession gained through compulsion always sounded like a monotone monologue. It lacked the nuances my beast could pick up when I scared the truth out of them. And sometimes, they turned out like April, their minds broken.

Justin’s throat bobbed.

“Several packs,” he said. “Several covens. Not openly, they volunteered. There are some hunters, some mercenaries. I overheard them at a meeting before they sent us down. They’re fathering outside the city, waiting for a signal.”

“Who’ll give that signal?”

He closed his eyes.

“Alpha Bronson,” he whispered.

“And what are they supposed to do once they get the signal?”

My muscles coiled. This was what I wanted to know. They could’t force Christos to pick a different successor, and they knew she was strong. What would they gain from this?

“Hunt,” Justin said simply. “Catch her. Expose her.”

“Expose that she’s unstable?”

“No,” Justin whispered. “Expose that she’s an abomination. Something that should never exist.”

So that was the angle. They couldn’t make a strong leader step down, but if they exposed her as a white wolf, then there was nothing anyone would say against a nationwide hunt. Public opilion was a terrible thing sometimes.

Now that her magic was stable, I wasn’t worried about what they would do, I was worried about how many of them Kitty would kill.

But they had forgotten that I existed. And they had no clue how powerful Kitty’s magic was. They were about to trigger

something much bigger than the wars between our kingdoms.

I stood, the chair legs scraping softly against the concrete. My mind was already moving through the next strategies. Killing them all quietly down here was more effective than trying to calh the panic and chaos.

“They said once she loses control, the Council will have no choice but to put her away. They’ll—”

The bond surged, and images flashed through my mind. Giant white paws digging into the earth. The wind on her face. Several wolves up ahead, visible through the treeline.

My beast pressed forward, but I pushed him down.

“Please don’t kill me,” the kid whispered, tears rolling down his face. “I know she’s stronger than me. But Dad said I had to do it. I’m the youngest; my older brothers have a bigger claim on becoming the next alpha. I just wanted to prove myself.”

The kid looked pathetic, and I almost felt sorry that he was about to lose his wolf. But I had more urgent things to do than decide on his fate.

‘Let me out,’ I told Tanner. ‘Keep him alive.

The door opened immediately. I didn’t explain as I rushed down the hallway. I’d promised Kitty I would protect her, and this time, it wasn’t about rushing blindly to fight at her side.

The bond exploded into motion, and adrenaline and hunger flooded me. She’d found them. Her hunt was just beginning.

By the time I reached the surface and stepped into the evening air, my beast was pushing against me stronger than before, clawing under my ribs, demanding I rescue the damsel in distress.

He still didn’t understand. We could only hope that she didn’t kill them all. My only job now was to make sure they didn’t haul her into the Bureau basement as the threat that she obviously was.

The bond snapped tighter. I saw her bare feet on a dirt trail. More wolves. Flashes of people who were likely part of a coven.

If Nathan didn’t reach her in time, there wouldn’t be anyone left to question.
