The pressure deepened, pressing down on my shoulders until the ground beneath my paws cracked. My shadows bristled, and the phantom wolves at my sides lowered their heads as the stranger stepped closer.

Hunter didn’t move, but his hand shifted slightly behind him, like he was ready to push me back.

“I wouldn’t,” the man said, still smiling, as if he’d read the thought before Hunter acted. “You’ll only make this harder for yourselves.”

“Who are you?” Hunter’s voice was low, his beast pressing for control.

The man lifted his head, studying us both. He looked young, but his face was thin, and even in the dim light, I could see how pale he was. Dark hair, a crooked nose, a scar on his cheek, but still probably considered handsome.

“Someone’s been looking for you.” His gaze lingered on me. “Especially you.”

My hunger stirred, but it didn’t sharpen like it had been doing. My curiosity dulled the edges of it. Who was this man, and if he was working on someone’s orders, did that mean there was someone out there much stronger than him?

Hunter’s shadows surged backwards and tightened around us.

“Then you found us. Now what?”

“Now?” The man smiled again. I tasted his anticipation in the air, as if this were a game to him. “Now we see if the rumours were exaggerated.”

The air charged. Before I could react, the pressure vanished, and then it slammed back into us twice as hard. Hunter grunted and coughed up blood. My knees bent slightly as my claws dug into the soil. The phantom wolves flickered, their forms distorting.

I tried to push back and prepare for the fight, but the man stood there, just watching us.

Hunter’s shadows surged upward, forming a dense barrier that pushed against the invisible force, and mine rose without thought, threading into his. The moment they touched, warmth surged through the bond. It was familiar, grounding, and dangerously distracting. It slipped through cracks in the cold wall I’d built inside me, and something echoed back to him without my consent.

Hunter glanced back at me just for a second, but I’d already seen the relief in his eyes. I felt it in the bond. The warmth, the desperation to save me, the emotions that I didn’t want to think about when I hated him so much.

The pressure increased again, sucking all the air out of my lungs. The hunger inside me turned into something else. It shifted into resistance. I wanted to survive. Rather than feel like this fight would finally satisfy me, alarm bells rang through my mind, because for the first time, I wondered if I would die.

If we would die. Because Hunter had tied me to him now, for eternity.

My shadows thickened and slid across the ground, curling up until they wrapped around Hunter’s arms. They fused completely, forming a single mass that pushed back against the unseen weight. The warmth through the bond blazed brighter, and the crack in the cold wall inside me grew. But so did the magic flowing in my blood. I drew from Hunter, just as he drew from me, sharing our strength as we’d done before. The pressure around us eased, and I finally drew a deep, full breath.

Hunter’s fingers brushed the side of my neck, lightly, like he expected me to reject his touch again. But the warmth was still seeping into me. I didn’t pull away because the contact steadied me. When I didn’t resist, his hand settled more firmly into my fur.

“Interesting,” the man said. His brows lifted slightly, but he still didn’t make a move towards us. I’d almost forgotten about him.

“An omega white wolf,” he mused, “with magic. And bonded to the Lycan King. Is that why your wolf is larger than an alpha werewolf?”

His head tilted to the side, studying me again. Was this why he was here? To verify the rumours?

“Let me make this more interesting.”

The pressure spiked again, and Hunter swore under his breath as he pulled me closer, sliding his arm around my neck as if he could take the blow for both of us. My vision blurred, and I felt the strength draining from my body. As his shadows wrapped around my legs, our magic fused again, pushing back the intrusion in a single wave. The ground trembled as the force around us exploded outward.

The man chuckled as the pressure vanished completely. I staggered before straightening slowly. My legs trembled, and my chest burned as I struggled to draw deeper breaths.

“I’ve seen enough,” the man said.

Hunter didn’t release me as he wiped the blood from his mouth with the back of his hand.

“Are you done playing games?” he growled.

Hunter was much bigger than he used to be, but I wasn’t even sure if we could win this fight even if he shifted. There was no more magic in the air, yet my body was still weakening.

“For now.” The man folded his arms. “You’re stronger together. That’s rather…inconvenient.”

Hunter remained silent. He was an agent first; he wouldn’t deny or confirm anything. But who was this man? Unlike the wolves we fought before him, the magic around him was golden rather than a hazy red

“Have you evolved, Hunter Sterling?” he asked.

More silence. The man laughed out loud and then turned to walk back towards the exit.

“We’ll meet again soon, Your Majesties.”

And then he was gone.

The threat in his tone lingered, but my focus drifted. Something inside me still felt wrong. I wasn’t in pain

but my body shook, and the magic in my blood still ran hot, still stuck in defensive mode.

“Kitty?”

His voice sounded distant. My world tilted, and then the shift hit me without warning. Bone contracted, fur receded, and the ground felt colder against my bare skin as I dropped to my knees. My muscles trembled violently. I was weaker than I’d ever been before.

Hunter was beside me in an instant. He shrugged his jacket off and wrapped it around my shoulders before he lifted me in his arms. But I felt his body trembling too. I tasted his fear in the air.

“Stay with me, Kitty,” he whispered.

My fingers curled weakly into the fabric at his chest. The bond still pulsed beneath it all, slowly, like something inside me was reorganising. My cheek rested against his chest. Even though his heart was racing, it was still grounding.

“You’re freezing,” he muttered, pulling me closer.

My limbs went heavy. My world tilted again. Something shifted deep inside me, like my wolf folding inwards while my magic stretched too far.

The last thing I felt was his arms tightening around me as the darkness pulled me under.
