Kitty didn’t wake up on the drive. I held her in the back seat while Tanner drove us to a safehouse, a house I owned off the books. I kept my arms wrapped tightly around her, afraid that if let go, she would slip further away.
Her skin was still too cold, and the bond between us felt different. It wasn’t blocked completely, but I could barely feel what was going on in her heart. It pulsed slowly, as if it was changing.
Or Kitty and I were changing.
My magic burned through my veins, still fighting something that wasn’t physically there anymore, and my beast had retreated deep within me. I’d carried Kitty to the SUV through sheer will alone. My body was drained. That man had more power than the witch in the fog, and the implications of that were just starting to settle on me. We’d kept our shadows around us the whole time, but he’d easily seen through them.
Bronson knew that to go against Kitty and me, he needed to bring out the big guns. It looked like he’d found the biggest gun.
When Tanner stopped just outside the city, I looked up from Kitty’s face. The metal bars on the gates in front of us were rusty, and vines had woven through them. Weeds and grass grew uninhibited in front of it and the high wall around the property. To anyone tracking, this place hadn’t been disturbed in years, like the rest of the properties in the rundown neighbourhood.
‘Do you want me to come in?’ Tanner asked through the mindlink.
‘No. Just keep an eye on Bronson,’ I said. ‘From a distance. Don’t put yourself in any danger. We’re dealing with something much bigger than we thought.’
I tightened my jacket around Kitty before I carried her out.
‘Look into the covens, too. The hidden ones. The one who cast spells to protect them is called Fiona, but she’s under someone’s orders.
‘Yes, Your Majesty’
As the car drove off, I turned towards the gate. The security panel hung crookedly on the wall next to it, and was as rusty as the bars. I dragged my feet towards it and placed my hand on the digital screen. The panel in the wall slid open instantly, and I pushed it with my shoulder, forcing it wide enough to slip through. Magic from the barrier rippled over my skin as the panel slid back in place.
The path was overgrown, and the house looked abandoned from the outside. Peeling paint, broken shutters, a thick film of dust over the windows, and even a dank, musty scent from the ad wood. My limbs shook as I dragged my feet down the path, and as I crossed the threshold, more wards hummed alive,
But were they enough? I used to think this was the strongest magic in all three kingdoms, but after the two witches, that was not true anymore.
The door shut behind me with a muted click, and I took Kitty upstairs without turning on the lights, I knew the layout by memory, Outside was a dump, but the inside was warm and cosy Simple, functional furniture, a stock of non-perishable food, and a stack of weapons and medicine. My backup safehouse. My insurance for the kind of night that had just happened.
I hadn’t felt this helpless since the night my parents died.
When I finally lay Kitty on the bed, my legs finally gave out, and dropped beside her. She didn’t even move. If I hadn’t heard her steady heartbeat or felt her in the bond, I’d have thought she was dead. Her face looked too pale against the dark fabric of my bedding, and her skin felt like ice against mine.

I had just about enough strength left to pull the bedding over us and pull her against me before exhaustion pulled me under.
When my eyes opened again, the morning light was streaming rough the window, but I wasn’t feeling any better. My body ached like I’d just gone many rounds in a boxing gym. My beast was still coiled in my chest, and healing was happening too slowly.
What the hell had that witch done?
But at least Kitty’s body was no longer cold. She’d wrapped around me like a snake in her sleep, just like she used to do back at her apartment when we first met. Back when things weren’t so complicated.
I looked down at her face; her eyes were open, looking right up me. The bond stirred faintly, warmer than before, but my chest tightened when I felt how fragile it was. We were true mate; she could never truly get rid of me, and the bond would never truly break. But why did I feel like that gaze, without even hint of warmth in it, was so much worse?
“You didn’t take me back to Nathan’s,” Kitty whispered.
“They’re watching everything,” I said. “We’re in a safe house.”
She went silent again. She didn’t ask any questions, and her emotions didn’t stir in the bond. Still, the fact that I could feel them now filled my chest with hope. Even if what I felt was mostly a steady, unending wave of pain.
“You’re still angry with me,” I stated.
“Did you expect me to forgive what you did to me?”
My eyes fluttered closed as my chest twisted with the pain.
“You rejecting me at that time could have killed one of us,” I said I felt like a dick saying that out loud, because no matter how justified, there had been no consent. “And if we didn’t die, te bond would have just flared back to life. We’re true mates, Kitty. Do you truly not know what that means? I’d never hurt you.”
The pain in the bond didn’t sharpen. I wondered if she was too exhausted to fight like I was, because that man’s magic was still wrecking my body. She tried to move out of my arms, but her naked body brushed against mine, and the bond surged. She froze. Her breath brushed my chest as a fire lit in my blood,
And I felt the same fire faintly in hers.
My beast finally lifted his head, his focus on our mate. I hadn’t felt her wolf since she shifted back, but I sensed her now, only vaguely. Whatever that man did had probably knocked her wolf but of commission, too.
“I don’t… I don’t want the cold back,” she whispered.
What did she mean? Her skin was hot against my body now.
But her hand slid against my chest, gripping my shirt, and I didit dare move. The bond roared to life, and just like that, I was thrown back to that morning, when she’d kissed me, and I’d almost lost my head. Her breathing deepened, and her eyes flashed with that familiar need. The bond pulled me closer, bluing the distance she’d fought so hard to keep, I knew this was a bad idea, because she’d admitted she hadn’t forgiven me.
But she wanted me right now. How could I resist that?
I brushed her hair away from her face, and my hand lingered at her jaw. If she pulled back, I would let her go. I’d already. vowed never to force anything on her again. But she didn’t pull ack. She made the first move, pressing her lips to mine as she leaned into me with a soft, unsteady sound.
The heat in my blood turned into an inferno, but still, I let her lead. I let her hands explore as she pulled my clothes off. I let her take her time, giving her space to stop if she wanted to.
