Adriel curled his lips into a smile. "Wanna hike together?"
He invited Wynette to hike up the mountain with them.
The moment Wynette heard the suggestion, she agreed without hesitation. "Sure."
After she agreed, Adriel held out his hand toward her. "Give me the backpack."
Wynette was just about to say it wasn't necessary and that she could carry it herself.
But Adriel had already gently grabbed the strap of her backpack.
Seeing how insistent he was, Wynette eventually handed it over to him.
Gavin immediately stepped forward and took the bags from Wynette's hands. "I'll carry these."
Before Wynette could even refuse, the two bags had already disappeared from her hands.
Not only that, but Gavin also very tactfully asked Shirley for her backpack.
Shirley waved her hands repeatedly and said it wasn't necessary, but she still couldn't win against Gavin's persistence.
Gavin slung the backpack over his shoulder, then tossed the bags into the arms of the man behind him. "Brat, don't stand around empty-handed. Carry these properly."
The young man hurriedly caught them in a panic.
Wynette looked toward him again, curiosity flickering in her eyes.
Adriel took the initiative to introduce him. "Gavin's cousin, Amias Holloway."
Then he turned toward Amias. "Amias, this is Wynette Jewell."
Amias immediately greeted her politely. "Hi, Ms. Jewell."
After speaking, he even flashed her a sweet smile.
Gavin patted Amias on the shoulder. "Let's go."
Then he dragged him ahead toward the trail.
Out of the corner of her eye, Shirley watched Wynette and Adriel together. Then she quietly covered her mouth and giggled as she followed behind Gavin and the others.
She deliberately left space for Wynette and Adriel to be alone together.
She'd long suspected Adriel had feelings for Wynette. After all, a person's eyes couldn't lie.
From the moment Adriel saw Wynette, his gaze had stayed locked on her the entire time.
Adriel said to Wynette, "I came to Sacred Light Monastery before with Amias to pray. I got what I prayed for, so I came to pray again."
Wynette stared at the man beside her in shock. "You... actually believe in this stuff?"
She honestly thought someone like Adriel wouldn't.
The look on her face made him laugh. "At this point, I kind of have to."
The moment he said his wish had come true, Wynette couldn't help quietly wondering if the monastery was really that spiritually powerful.
Adriel continued, "Aren't you curious what I prayed for?"
The second he said that, Wynette immediately looked at him. "Tell me."
Honestly, she'd never planned on asking something this personal herself.
But since Adriel brought it up first, asking about it didn't seem inappropriate anymore.
What Wynette failed to realize was that if Adriel willingly opened this topic and tossed it to her, then the prayer probably involved her.
Adriel's smile widened. "I prayed for you and Noah to never end up together, for your marriage registration to fail, and for you to dump that cheating bastard as soon as possible."
Of course, those weren't actually the prayers he'd made. But they were related to Wynette.
What he truly prayed for was for Wynette to finally notice him, become his, and never leave again.
But Adriel kept all of that to himself. He had no intention of telling her.
Wynette froze for a moment. "You prayed all that? Aren't you worried you'll get punished for being too greedy? Who asks for that much?"
She genuinely thought Adriel was joking around with her.
Adriel replied calmly, "As long as you're sincere, prayers do get answered. Sure, I prayed for a lot, but I also gave plenty of offerings. With how sincere I was, I'm sure God heard me."
Why is she looking at another man? What's so interesting about that guy?
"Not really," Wynette answered honestly. "That backpack just feels weirdly familiar."
Hearing her say that, Adriel followed her gaze and explained, "He's been carrying that backpack for over ten years. Abbot Benedict from the monastery bought it for him. The kid treasures it like crazy. Normally, nobody's even allowed to touch it."
Benedict Weaver was the abbot of Sacred Light Monastery, and Amias had been training under him there.
Back when Amias was little, he'd fallen down a hillside and lost his backpack. To comfort the young Amias, Benedict personally took him down the mountain the next day to buy a new one.
Amias only carried it when visiting the monastery on weekends and took extremely good care of it.
Honestly, it was just an ordinary hiking backpack anyone could buy.
After hearing Adriel's explanation, Wynette finally looked away, though she still felt the backpack seemed familiar somehow.
But no matter how hard she tried, she simply couldn't remember where she'd seen it before.
Seeing that Wynette was still thinking about Amias's backpack, Adriel got annoyed all over again. "Why are you paying so much attention to that kid anyway?"
It was their very first meeting, yet she kept noticing him. No wonder Adriel's jealousy flared instantly.
Wynette turned toward him in confusion. "Since when was I overly focused on him?"
She genuinely felt wronged over Adriel suddenly getting jealous like this.
Looking at his unhappy expression, Wynette chuckled softly. "Alright, I promise I won't look at him anymore. From now on, my eyes will only be looking at you. Happy?"
The second the words left her mouth, even Wynette found herself stunned.
Did I just... coax Adriel?
Sure enough, the moment Adriel heard her words, the tension in his expression finally eased. "That's more like it."
His tone carried obvious smugness, mixed with the faintest hint of playfulness.
Wynette was speechless.
Well... looks like I just discovered another side of Adriel nobody else knew about.
Honestly, not a bad deal.
