**When Night Grows Softer Hope Returns To Lead Us by Asa Rowan Finn**
**Chapter 141**
Talya took a deep breath, mentally preparing herself to fill Sage in on everything that had happened. She wanted to share as much as she could, but there were certain truths—like the existence of wolves and vampires—that she couldn’t disclose. Sage was blissfully unaware of the hidden dangers lurking in the shadows, and Talya felt a heavy weight on her conscience, knowing that revealing such secrets would only burden her friend. “I’ll have to check with Liam first,” she thought, “before I even consider mentioning any of it.” After all, Sage had lived her entire life without knowledge of these creatures, and it was imperative that they kept their secret safe.
“I just can’t wrap my head around the fact that you have a broken arm and a broken leg. How on earth do you even manage to get around?” Sage’s voice was filled with genuine concern and disbelief.
Talya shifted uncomfortably, searching for the right words to explain her situation. “Well, um, I manage,” she replied, feeling a bit awkward under Sage’s scrutiny.
Sage’s eyes sparkled with mischief. “Wait a minute! Does Liam carry you? I bet he totally does, doesn’t he?” The excitement in her voice was palpable.
Caught off guard, Talya hesitated for a moment, looking for a way to sidestep the question. But in the end, she couldn’t help but smile and nodded. “Yes, he does.”
Sage squealed with delight, her enthusiasm infectious. “Oh my gosh! He has it so bad for you!” Talya felt her cheeks heat up, grateful that Liam wasn’t present to witness her blush. She was thankful for this moment of levity, a welcome distraction from the weight of her circumstances.
“When are you coming home?” Sage asked, her voice tinged with longing.
“I have no idea,” Talya admitted, her heart sinking a little. “I don’t think it’s going to be anytime soon.”
“It stinks without you here. I wish I was there with you,” Sage complained, her disappointment evident.
“I know. Me too,” Talya replied, wishing she could bridge the distance between them. “Maybe once school is done, if I’m still here, you could come visit.”
“That would be awesome!” Sage exclaimed, her spirits lifting momentarily. But then she groaned dramatically. “Well, I’d better get back to class. One of us has to graduate,” she quipped, her tone playful yet sincere.
Talya chuckled softly. “Well, hopefully both of us will graduate; but I’ll let you get back to it. I promise to stay in touch now that I have a phone again.”
“See that you do, or I will show up there!” Sage threatened jokingly, but there was a hint of seriousness in her tone.
“Okay,” Talya said, a smile spreading across her face. After they exchanged their goodbyes, Talya hung up the phone, a sense of warmth lingering from their conversation. Now, however, she faced a new challenge: figuring out how to navigate her way to the shower.
With determination, she managed to pull herself upright on her good leg, but the next step was a mystery. She hopped awkwardly over to her dresser and closet, grabbing some clothes, but that was as far as she could go. Just then, a gentle knock interrupted her thoughts.
“Come in,” Talya called out, her curiosity piqued.
