**When Night Grows Softer Hope Returns To Lead Us by Asa Rowan Finn**
**Chapter 153**
“There is,” the wolf growled, his voice laced with fury. “The vampires are escalating their malevolence to unprecedented heights.”
“What exactly are they doing?” Talya inquired, her tone cautious, as if the very act of speaking might draw unwanted attention.
“They are attempting to transform human females,” he replied, his anger palpable in the air between them.
“Transforming them into vampires?” Talya gasped, her breath hitching at the thought. The wolf nodded solemnly, and Talya instinctively brought her hand to her mouth, horrified by the implications of his words.
“You will need to dream walk into the minds of the vampires to discover their whereabouts,” the wolf instructed, his eyes narrowing with determination. “We must put a stop to this.”
Calya stared at him, her mind racing to comprehend the enormity of what he was asking. “You mean I have to do what I do with you, but with a vampire?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper, as if uttering the words might summon the darkness itself.
“Similar,” the wolf affirmed, his gaze unwavering.
“Why can’t you just tell me where they’re operating?” Talya pressed, frustration bubbling beneath the surface.
“I do not possess that knowledge,” the wolf admitted, his voice tinged with regret.
“I thought you were all-knowing. Aren’t you like some kind of god?” Talya challenged, her curiosity piqued.
“I understand everything about my wolves and can see all that transpires in the shifter world, but when it comes to the human realm and the vampire domain, I am as lost as anyone else,” he explained, his tone revealing a hint of vulnerability.
Talya absorbed this revelation with a heavy heart. “Wow,” she murmured, the weight of his words settling in. “How do you know the vampires are turning humans?” she asked, her voice trembling with concern.
“One of my wolves in Boston stumbled upon a newly transformed girl. She had been completely drained of blood—an unmistakable vampire trait. She was discovered lifeless in a dumpster,” the wolf said, his voice thick with rage.
Talya felt her stomach churn at the gruesome imagery. “That’s horrific,” she whispered, the reality of the situation hitting her like a physical blow.
“She was merely sixteen,” the wolf added, his tone somber, as if mourning a lost soul.
Talya inhaled sharply, the gravity of the situation weighing heavily on her chest. “That’s just awful,” she breathed out, the words barely escaping her lips.
The wolf nodded in agreement. “She is not the only one,” he said, his eyes reflecting the sorrow of countless others. Talya nodded in silence, choosing not to pry further; she didn’t want to delve deeper into that darkness.
“So, what’s my role in all of this?” she asked, her voice steady despite the turmoil within.
Talya nodded, impressed by the prospect. However, as they approached the vampire dream realm, a foul odor assaulted her senses before she even set foot in the darkness. She gagged, instinctively pinching her nose shut.
“Blood,” the wolf answered her unasked question, his voice grim. Talya took tentative steps into the murky shadows. Her eyes adjusted slowly; it remained dark, but she could at least discern her surroundings. Glancing back, she realized the wolf was no longer beside her. Panic surged again as she took a few steps backward, only to be greeted by the warmth of sunlight. She had returned to the wolf realm. Once her eyes adjusted, she turned to the wolf. “Aren’t you coming?” she asked, confusion etched on her face.
The wolf shook his head. “I cannot cross over to the vampire side,” he explained, his expression grave.
“What? Why not?” Talya questioned, the realization dawning on her. “Because you’re enemies?” she ventured, her voice tinged with understanding.
The wolf nodded solemnly. “Indeed. Come. We have much to accomplish.” He guided her through the familiar terrain of the wolf realm once more, leading her to an area she had never explored before. He halted before a vast body of water. “This is what we refer to as the melding. Each realm has its own. This is where you can find the individual strands that weave together dreams. Each realm possesses a gathering place like this one. I can only imagine that the vampires’ melding is situated in a river of blood.” Talya fought to suppress a grimace, unsure if she had succeeded, but the wolf pressed on.
“Each strand represents a dream woven for a single creature. Your task is to locate the strands connected to the vampires who possess knowledge of the locations and follow them until they reveal a specific place,” the wolf instructed, his tone firm.
Talya stared at the wolf, uncertainty creeping into her thoughts. “Um, not to challenge your authority, but that sounds like an incredibly daunting task. Is it even feasible?” she asked, skepticism creeping into her voice.
“It’s the only option we have,” the wolf replied, his voice resolute.
“Oh boy,” Talya muttered under her breath, a mix of apprehension and determination swirling within her. “Well, okay then. Train me on how to do it.”
