**When Night Grows Softer Hope Returns To Lead Us by Asa Rowan Finn**
**Chapter 166**
As Talya listened to the conversation unfolding around her, her gaze drifted towards the building looming ahead. The structure was imposing, and as she let her eyes wander over each shop, a tight knot of anxiety twisted in her chest. The sensation intensified, especially when her focus landed on the large shop at the far end. Without even realizing it, her feet began to move, a sense of urgency propelling her forward. Before she knew it, she was sprinting, the pavement blurring beneath her as her heart raced.
With every step she took, the pressure in her chest grew heavier, a mix of fear and determination. She barely made it a few strides before a strong grip seized her from behind, yanking her back. The shock of it made her cry out, a scream escaping her lips, only to be muffled by a hand that clamped over her mouth. “Talya,” came a familiar gruff voice, and she instinctively recognized it was Max. He released her, but the moment was still charged with tension.
“Were you trying to get yourself killed?” Garrett’s voice cut through the air, his eyes blazing with concern and frustration.
“We have to get in there,” Talya insisted, her voice urgent, a sense of destiny coursing through her veins.
“We will,” Garrett replied firmly, “but on my terms. Liam would kill me if I let anything happen to you,” he muttered, more to himself than to anyone else. “Emma and Talya, you’re staying in the car. Wyatt, you’re with them.” Wyatt nodded in agreement, but both Emma and Talya immediately protested.
“Absolutely not,” Garrett said, his tone brooking no argument. He turned to Emma, his expression resolute.
“I’m going,” Talya declared, crossing her arms defiantly, a fire igniting within her.
“No,” he shot back, his voice leaving no room for negotiation.
“You need me in there to guide you,” she countered, her resolve unwavering.
“No,” he repeated, this time his tone held an undeniable authority that made her hesitate. She opened her mouth to argue, but before she could utter a word, he continued. “I know you’re not part of my pack, so you don’t feel my commands like the others do. But I am ordering you to stay here. We have no idea what we’re up against in there. I can’t risk bringing a human female with me. If Liam finds out I took you anywhere near vampires, it would ruin our friendship and probably cost me my place in the pack. So go to the car with Emma and Wyatt,” he commanded, his voice firm.
Talya felt a surge of frustration bubbling within her, ready to explode into a protest, when Emma gently placed her hand on her arm. “Come on, Talya,” she urged softly, her eyes filled with a mixture of concern and understanding. Talya hesitated, the pleading look in Emma’s eyes disarming her.
“Fine,” she conceded, her voice laced with irritation as they began to walk toward the car. But before they could reach their destination, a piercing scream from Emma shattered the moment. Talya’s heart dropped as two men seemed to materialize from the shadows, their hands grabbing both her and Emma with a fierce grip. Talya struggled to break free, but their hold was unyielding.
