**When Night Grows Softer Hope Returns To Lead Us by Asa Rowan Finn**
**Chapter 168**
Talya surveyed her surroundings with a mixture of astonishment and confusion. The air felt charged, almost electric, as if it were thick with unspoken words. She sensed the wolf’s presence before she even turned to confront him. “Did you help me fall asleep?” she inquired, her voice tinged with curiosity.
“You were assisting one of my wolves, so I returned the favor,” he replied with a simplicity that belied the gravity of the situation.
“Thank you,” Talya murmured, her expression shifting to one of discomfort. “I really dislike giving blood. Is Liam going to be okay?” The worry in her voice was palpable, a tight knot forming in her stomach.
“There’s nothing more you can do for him than what you’re already doing,” the wolf stated, his tone steady yet somber.
Talya clung to the hope that this was his way of saying, *He’s going to be fine.* A heavy sigh escaped her lips as she settled into her seat. “We found the vampire site,” she declared, her voice devoid of emotion.
“I know,” the wolf responded, his gaze unwavering.
“We didn’t arrive in time. They were all dead,” she said, the weight of her words hanging in the air like a thick fog. The wolf remained silent, but she could feel his sorrow resonating within her.
“Why do they keep trying to turn humans if they know it’s futile?” Talya questioned, her brow furrowed in thought.
“Why do men do the things they do?” the wolf countered, his eyes reflecting a depth of understanding that made her heart ache.
Talya found herself at a loss for words. “How do we stop it?” she pressed, desperation creeping into her voice.
“My wolves will need to obliterate every one of these facilities where this is happening,” the wolf declared, his tone sharp and resolute.
“Is there more?” Talya asked, her heart racing.
“Yes,” he replied, his demeanor tense. “It is your responsibility to locate the other sites and guide the wolves there. They must eradicate the facilities.”
Talya nodded, determination igniting within her. “I’ll get to work.”
“There’s no time to waste,” the wolf insisted, urgency lacing his voice.
Suddenly, Talya opened her eyes wide, startled to find a pair of piercing blue eyes scrutinizing her. “Are you okay?” Liam’s voice was rough, but concern laced his words. It took her a moment to gather her bearings. A quick glance around revealed she was in the clinic for the wolves, lying in a bed adjacent to Liam’s. Only, he wasn’t lying down anymore; he stood over her, clad only in black sweatpants, his body a testament to the struggles he had faced.
Talya attempted to sit up, but dizziness swept over her like a wave. “Just take your time,” Liam urged, his voice softening.
Shaking her head, she looked up at him, confusion etched on her features. “You’re all right,” she stated, the obviousness of her words hanging between them. “You shouldn’t be standing. You need to be resting. You almost died!”
“I’m fine,” he insisted, his eyes hardening with determination. “But you’re not. Paul said you lost too much blood. That’s why you passed out. Don’t do that again, Talya!”
