I Rejected My Obsessive Werebeast novel Chapter 40

Chapter 40

A cluster of people in the corridor went quiet the second they saw me Eyes landed on me, held for a beat, then slid away. By the time I passed, the low murmuring had started up again behind my back.

I glanced down at myself – shirt buttoned correctly, skirt not inside out. Nothing obviously wrong.

I got to my desk. Before I could even drop my bag, Mia leaned over from the next cubicle, face tight, and shoved her phone at me.

“You need to see this video. It went live this morning.” I picked up the phone.

The video was blurry but recognizable. Office corridor. A soaking-wet woman collapsed in Kane’s arms. Shot from far down the hall clear face, but the body shape was unmistakably mine.

“It’s everywhere,” Mia said. “People already figured out it’s you. Someone dug up the video of Silas kissing you too. Now everyone’s saying you’re juggling two werebeasts.”

I scrolled through the comments.

“One woman, two S-class beasts. Bold.””Isn’t she Connor’s owner? How did she switch so fast?””Greedy much.”

I locked the screen, handed the phone back, and kept my face still. My fingers, though, curled tight.

Chapter 40

>The desk phone rang before I could process any of it.

Boss’s voice: “My office. Now.”

I stood up. Every pair of eyes in the room stuck to my back on the way to the door.

I pushed into his office, shut it behind me, and he immediately slammed a stack of printed photos onto the desk in front of me. Every single one was the same frame – Kane carrying me, wet and

unconscious, out of the restroom.

He slapped the desk with his palm. “What is going on? The project hasn’t even started and you’re already all over the internet. What do

you

think the client is going to think of us?”

I opened my mouth to explain.

There were two knocks before the door was pushed open.

Emily walked in holding a coffee

like she’d just happened to be

passing by to drop off files. She stopped next to the desk, saw the scattered photos, and raised one eyebrow

“Boss,” she said, voice slow and syrupy. “I warned you about her. She’ s flighty. First she had an A-class dog werebeast, then she hooked an S-class tiger, and now she’s getting cozy with Kane. If you leave this project with her and a scandal breaks out, who takes the fall?”

The boss’s face went darker. He cut me off before I could get a word

out.

“You’re off the project. I’m reassigning it.”

Chapter 40

-What? No!

“Boss,” I said. “Please reconsider. I’ve put a lot of work into this. Two versions of the interview outline are already done

He waved his hand. “It’s decided. Go

out.”

“Boss-”

“I said get out!” I looked at him for a moment, didn’t argue again.

Instead, I bent down and picked up every scattered photo from the edge of his desk, one by one. Stacked them neatly. Placed them back on the surface. Then I turned, opened the door, and walked out.

Heads popped up and immediately ducked back down as I passed. I went straight to my desk, sat down, pulled the interview outline and confirmation letter out of my drawer/and flipped through them once. The Kane Foundation logo and the official cooperation stamp were printed at the top.

Mia leaned over, voice low. “What happened?”

“I’m off the project.”

Mia opened her mouth. Closed it. “That’s so-”

“I’m fine,” I said, and put the files back in the drawer. “Let’s see what happens.”
