Chapter 41

I went through the names in order, couldn’t sort them, and decided to stop wasting time guessing. I’d wait and see whose tail showed itself first.

I opened my laptop and started sorting through other clients’ files, trying to force my attention back to work.

Two pages in, I realized I’d been staring at the same line for almost a minute without reading it.

I closed the laptop, squeezed my eyes shut hard, then opened them again. Mia had left a cup of hot water on the corner of my desk, and she pat on my shoulder and gone.

Finally, clock-out.

I packed up and walked out of the building. The names were still cycling through my head as I stepped onto the sidewalk.

A small stone hit my shoulder.

I stopped. Turned. A second stone. A third. Then more arms, my back, bouncing off my bag.

A group of young women stood by the flower bed across the street. One was holding up a phone, recording. Another held a handwritten sign:

>”Silas belongs to us. Stay away.

The one in front shouted: “That’s her! Two-timing. First Connor, then hoarding Silas, now she’s going after Kane too!”

Others chimed in. “So selfish.” “How can one person hold onto two S- class beasts?” “Greedy.”

I stood still. Stones rolled around my shoes and stopped. Passersby were slowing down, turning to look.

I opened my mouth to say something. Before I could, a second wave pushed through from the side – reporters. They hold microphones, arriving fast. Lenses almost hit my face.

“Did you use work as an excuse to get close to Kane?””Is your relationship with Silas staged?””What really happened with Connor?”

The questions came at me all at once. I stepped back half a pace, my ankle caught on the curb, and I tipped backward. My bag slipped from my hand and hit the pavement.

I braced myself with one hand, my palm scraping against the rough brick.

The reporters pushed closer. Lenses inches from my face.

Then a figure pushed through the crowd.

A hand came down on the nearest microphone and shoved it aside. Another hand grabbed my arm and pulled me up, pulling me behind him in one motion.

flash-lit half-light.

“I pulled her out of a locked restroom yesterday,” he said, facing the lenses. “Someone trapped her inside and dumped cold water on her. As her cooperation partner, I went to rescue her. That’s it.”

Before the reporters could respond, the crowd shifted again open from the other side.

Silas pushed through, shoulder brushing the girl with the sign hard enough to knock it sideways. He came up on my other side in three strides, his arm sliding around my waist from behind, pulling me against him.

His eyes swept the circle of phones and cameras. His voice was low. “I know what my owner is better than any of you. Yesterday was a setup. Believe it or not, she wouldn’t do the things you’re accusing her of.”

Two S-class werebeasts. One on each side of me.

Flashes popped. But nobody stepped closer.

seconds The crowd held its breath for a few seconds.

I thought we might actually get out of this.
