Chapter 62
Aurora’s POV
I set the keycard on the coffee table.
Silas sat down next to me, and we both just stared at it for a few seconds. The scratched plastic, the worn edges, the faded magnetic strip. It looked like nothing. Just an old piece of trash.
But it was a way in.
Silas spoke first. “If the boss down there is Lucien, you can’t go. You’ve already been tied up by him once. This time it’s too risky.”
I kept my eyes on the card. “That’s exactly why I need to go. If the missing werebeasts are connected to him, then this whole thing is worse than I thought.”
“Then I’ll go with you,” he said.
“You can’t. Two people is too obvious. And you’ve got work at the racetrack. If you disappear for a whole night, someone’s going to notice.”
–
His tail slapped against the couch cushion – once, sharp. “So you go down alone and I just sit here and wait? I can’t do that.”
I looked at him. His jaw was tight, his ears flat against his head. He was scared. I was scared too. But fear wasn’t going to get those werebeasts out of whatever hole they’d been thrown into.
I reached forward and picked up the card. “Then we change the plan. Tomorrow I’ll go to the surface level first — pretend I’m there to finish up

interview material. Scope out the shift changes for the underground
entrance. When I actually go down, you wait outside. We set a time limit. I’m not out in an hour, you go straight to the arena management.”
Silas’s tail was still thumping against the cushion. “An hour’s too long. Forty minutes.”
I watched him for a moment. “Forty minutes. Fine.”
I slipped the card into my pocket.
The next day at work, my boss called me into his office.
L
“The interview video with Kane went live,” he said, leaning back in his chair. “The response has been incredible. Lots of discussion. It’s bringing a lot of attention to our company.
I nodded. “Good to hear.”
He tapped his pen against the desk. “How’s the arena story coming along?”
“I’ve got some leads. I’ll update you once I’ve confirmed them.”
He nodded slowly. “The arena business is serious. If you can pull this off, I’ll promote you.”
I nodded again. “Understood.”
After work I went straight to the arena.
I didn’t use the front entrance. Instead I circled around to the side corridor the one with the iron door still half–open, the lights just as dim as last
time.

I pulled out the card and pressed it against the sensor.
Agreen light. A short beep. The lock clicked open.
I pushed the door open and pulled it shut behind me, then started down the stairs.
The bottom level looked the same as I remembered. Concrete walls. Iron doors with numbers. Some of them stood half–open, revealing empty rooms inside the floors stained with dried water and drag marks.
–
I moved quietly down the corridor, my footsteps soft against the grime- covered ground. After about ten meters I rounded a corner and heard it the scrape of something heavy being pulled across stone.
I pressed my back against the wall and waited.
When the sound faded slightly, I leaned around the edge.
A small figure in a cleaning uniform was struggling to drag a heavy bucket toward the deeper part of the corridor. A leopard werebeast. Young Thin.
“Freya?” I called out, soft.
The girl froze. Her head snapped around, eyes wide, alert.
I held up my hands. “I’m here for your father. He asked me to check if you‘ re safe.”
–
Something flickered in her eyes – relief, maybe, or just the fact that I wasn’t a threat. She glanced left and right, then lowered her voice.
“You need to leave. Things aren’t right down here lately. A lot of werebeasts have been taken to a lower level. They haven’t come back.” She shifted the bucket grip, her knuckles white. “I’ve only survived
