"How can you threaten me?" she snapped, raising her voice before quickly lowering it as she glanced into the backseat.
York remained fast asleep.
Finn watched her.
"What's the issue?" he asked. "I'm only telling the truth."
His tone was incredibly calm.
But it was utterly terrifying.
Chloe sat there, her knuckles white as she squeezed the seatbelt.
She stared at his profile, searching for any flicker of emotion, but there was none.
He was simply stating a fact.
A fact that would utterly ruin her.
And it sent a chill straight down her spine.
"You just don't want to get legally married, do you," she murmured.
Finn didn't answer.
"Fine, you get your wish," she conceded. "But your parents might not listen to me."
"That's fine. As long as you know your part."
The car rolled smoothly into the garage.
The bright moonlight overhead failed to pierce the shadows of their strained relationship.
"Finn," Chloe finally whispered, sounding defeated.
"Yes?"
"Do you feel anything for me at all? Even a little bit?"
Finn offered only a suffocating silence.
It was a chilling lack of response, breaking her heart while simultaneously giving her a shred of hope.
He didn't say no, which meant there had to be something.
The vehicle parked, and Finn killed the engine, unbuckling his seatbelt.
He moved with a slow, calculated grace.
Chloe remained in her seat, listening to his footsteps round the hood as he opened the back door to carry York out.
York mumbled, shifting against his shoulder before settling back to sleep.
No matter what, he was still an incredible father.
That thought was her lifeline, and she clung to it desperately.
