Finn sounded as though he were genuinely asking a simple question.
Sienna squeezed her pen, absolutely seething.
He was putting on such a good show!
That was her personal cell phone number, so of course it wouldn't work.
But she couldn't say that out loud with Isaac and Penny standing right there.
"Provide a family member's number," Sienna murmured, looking back down at the form to mask her boiling emotions.
"You read my file earlier, Dr. Sterling," Finn replied. "I have an unmarried status."
He emphasized the last two words, desperately trying to convey a hidden meaning.
It was laughable.
Sienna dropped her pen.
It was a light toss, but Penny watched the pen roll across the desk, slip over the edge, and clatter loudly onto the floor.
Sienna did not bother picking it up.
She stared at Finn, and Finn stared right back.
They were separated by the desk and the form sitting on it, the emergency contact line glaringly blank.
"I've always used this number in the past, so why can't I keep using it now?" Finn's voice rang out crystal clear.
Sienna clenched her fists, her knuckles trembling slightly.
Looking at his face from such a close distance, she had the overwhelming urge to slap him across the cheek.
But right now, she was the doctor, and he was the patient.
Not to mention her supervisor and subordinate were flanking them. Doing something like that would mean she had completely lost her mind.
The tension was suffocating, stretched so tight that it felt like a snapping point was inevitable.
Penny peeked over Sienna's shoulder, reading the number and silently reciting it in her head.
She slapped a hand over her mouth, her eyes going wide.
She knew there was history between these two!
She remembered the way Finn had stood outside the clinic with that insulated food delivery bag.
She remembered the look on Sienna's face when she told Penny to eat it.
He looked as though someone had just plunged a knife straight into his vitals.
A raw, inescapable agony washed over his face.
He stared at Chloe, the hopeful light in his eyes instantly dying out, leaving behind nothing but suffocating despair.
The phrase 'the father of my child' was more than enough to destroy him.
It completely decimated the confident front he had just put up while declaring his 'unmarried status' to Sienna.
Sienna's expression didn't change, her face remaining perfectly pale.
"Ma'am," she began, her tone as flat and professional as it would be for any other patient. "This is a private examination room. Unauthorized individuals need to wait in the hallway."
Chloe locked eyes with her.
She offered a sickly sweet smile.
"Oh, you know me, Dr. Sterling. I'm hardly a stranger. I came to keep him company for his physical. My husband can be so careless, and I just worry he won't look after himself."
She closed the distance and linked her arm affectionately through Finn's.
The gesture was incredibly natural, a movement she had clearly perfected over time.
